Best Rabbit Gun?
I was just wondering what a good gun would be for some jack rabbits. Friend just mentioned that we should do that this winter.
I would spend a fare amount of money on it, since I like having guns :D |
RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
HOWA 1500 in .338 Win Mag.

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
I only got to shoot Jack Rabbit's a few times. I hunted with a 9422-and I sure had a good time. We shot a bunch of them. I stil can not believe how many rabbits are out there. Tom.

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
Are you gonna skin and eat 'em? If so then I would think a good .22 would be the ticket. I can't comment on the .17's because I don't have one. I've heard that they are too much for squirrels, but in your situation I would think the .17's would do just fine with head shots and give you more range. Now, if you aren't gonna skin and eat 'em then just about any varmint round would do. I don't have a varmint rifle, but if I was in the market I'd give the .204 Ruger a serious look.

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
My 22 Mag was always good for jacks. The 'best' rifle choice really depends on how close you can get to them.

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
The 22 Magnum works good for South Dakota rabbits or Texas whitetails.;). Right Rammer?

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
.22 LR or .22 Win. Mag. Good luck.

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
I would think the 22mag would be the perfect setup for a dedicated jackrabbit gun. If money's of no concern look at Kimber rifles. I believe they make a 22mag, I know they make a 22LR (which would be plenty of gun also). I'm not a fan of the 17s but I suppose this may be their niche. They are too much more squirrels IMHO. Not enough for yotes. This leaves large rabbits, raccoons (for my area). You never take more than a 20 yard shot at coons, you have all night to take it and a thousand trees to rest your gun up against so the "flatness" of the 17s is completely unneeded there. Soooo...yeah, 22mag would be my pick with the 17HMR a distant second right in front of the good ole 22LR.

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
I used a 12 guage the other day. Worked nicely. If you use a 12 guage for jacks, use the full choke. EJ

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
I think the good ol' .22 LR would be just fine for jackrabbits, especially if you have an auto-loader.

Wow, Reb, I'm surprised you didn't say 6.5x55 Swede!:D

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
We do alot of rabbit hunting in the winter.A good ole 22 LR dose a great job.I use a Marlin auto and a good 3-9 scope.I like the auto when the little buggers are running.
If were talking 150-200 yds the .223 works great. We don't eat them but cash in on the bounty(1.50 to 3.00).Have a good night 100-150 rabbits pays for the gas and then some. BBJ |
RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
.22lr is the way to go, especially if yer gonna eat the little critters.

RE: Best Rabbit Gun?
30-06. There is nothing it can't do. Might try 220gr roundnose. That should take care of any jackrabbitt you see.

That auto shotgun is pretty cool. I was wondering about .223. I would like to be able to really reach out and touch 'em
