25-06 questions

I am looking for a new gun. something light and small in caliber size. I really like the ballistics of the 25-06 and would like to hear some reviews on it. I would be hunting coyote with it and possibly take it deer hunting once in a while. I have also considered the 243 wssm but I hear they tend to "walk" on the target once a few shots are fired through the barrel.

Does savage make a heavy barrel 25-06 that is a decent gun? If so which model is it? I would like to check one out in SS

Is it worth the extra money for a 257 WBY mag? I see the ammo is about double priced but performance is also a bit better

I've got a Tikka T-3 Stainless Synthetic in 25/06. It's a shooter and plenty for coyotes, deer and antelope. It has a very mild recoil and, IMO, is often overlooked when it shouldn't be. I'd shy away from the WBY or ROB just due to ammo...availibility and cost. They are great calibers though. God luck.

I have a win. 70 in 25-06, its one of my best shooting guns, 3/4in groups @100yds. It likes win. 120 gr. positive expanding points, but does not shoot rem core-lokts very good at all. I have shot antelope and deer with this bullet and have had great luck with it.

Great round for the purposes you stated.Personally, I don't see much benefit choosing the 257 weatherby over the 25-06 Rem.

RE: 25-06 questions

is the 25-06 comparable to the 260 rem? I am looking to make this a coyote gun but want it to be able to take a deer if needed. I was thinking of getting a 220 swift or a 22-250 but then my deer hunting would require a different rifle

A .260 is a more moderate, less overbore caliber than the .25-06. A great deer rifle, to be sure; but the 25-06 has an edge when ranges get out there beyond 300 yards. Also, the 25-06 would arguably be a better coyote gun - but not quite as good as a fast 6MM.

6mm is better you say?

For what your wanting the 2506 is a great choice. If you don'thandload forget the .257 wby.

I am not aware of the 2506 being offered in a HB by savage, SS or blue.

25-06 is an extremely good cartridge. My personal choice for Long Range shooting.

You may also want to consider the standard .243 Winchester. My brother has used a Rem700 243 forever and I have seen him bust groundhogs and coyotes on several occasions out past 400yrds.

Velocity is NOT a replacement for marksmanship, and the cheaper ammo cost will allow more practice and as we all know "Practice makes Best"
