Both are very great rounds and I truly think the two are in the same class, but as a rifle I think the 30-06 is a class above for one reason...

The reason being the wealth of children the .30-1906 had.

Savage rifles are easy to change barrels on so you could buy a .25-06(longrange)and a .338-06(Bigcritters) barrel fairly cheap and have all distances and game covered easily with one receiver and stock which keeps your weapon feeling the exact same regardless of caliber change. Plus of course you would still have the factory .30-06 for cheap and abundant ammo.

Ahh but,
The 7MM family tree isn't a straight line! It has branches!

The .308 has a few kids of its own... .243, .260, 7mm-08, .338 Federal, .358 Win...

I have no problems with the 7mm. The most popular 7mm uses the 1906 Springfield case...the .270 Winchester...270(7mmin1906case),280(.284in1906case ),30-06(.308in1906case).338-1906etc.

I have seen other "wildcats" as well..224,.243,.264, all using the same 1906 Springfield case, which means you have access to awealth of calibers using ONLY 1 Long Action Receiver

A combination of .25-06,30-06,338-06 3 sets of Leupold quick detach rings 3 good scopes and an excellent stock(H.s.Precision,etc) Savage with accutrigger will cover ALL of North America and half of Africa.

Actually, it's the .280 that is a 7mm, not the .270.

.270 thousands of an inch is closer to 7mm than .284 thousands of an inch is.

If you do the math you will find that .270 is less small as apposed to .284 being too large in outer diameter to be 7mmOD

The .458 Win Mag is father to two of the best magnum cartridges out there, the .300 and .338 Winchester Magnum.

I agree, and have contemplated on switching to a Win short mag but I have too many years behind the '06...I bought a RugerM77 7mm Rem Mag a few years back and although I really like it and it shoots really well I justkeep grabbing the Savage '06 everytime I hit the woods. I guess I am just a one rifle type hunter???
