RE: 7mm WSM
ejpaul1,
I own a Super Shadow Win model70 in 7mm WSM. I was a die hard 30.06 fan since 1978. Bought the gun on a whim becauseWinchester ceased production. I have only put about 150 rounds through it since I got it the beginning of October. Haven't quite dialed it in yet with handloads but getting very close for my liking. Currentlyon my 4th powder choice of Reloder19. I shot a muley the 4th season here in Coloradoabout 60 yards slightly quartering away using 140gr Nosler Accubond, H4895 averaging 2912fps.. Hit him a couple of inches behind left shoulder about 2/3 the way up. Entry hole not too bad. Exit, just clipped the right shoulder, was about the size of a tennis ball. He took about 10 steps and that was it. Bottom line I really like this caliber and recoil is what I would consider mild to moderate. The real test will be on longer range shots. As you stated on paper there is not any real difference between the 2 except you can get the same performance with a little bit less powder. Brass is more expensive than regular 7mm brass by $14 per 50. So far I have 3 reloads on the cases and they look fine, but as you can tell from above I don't load things up "hot". On the same sudject last Sunday I picked up a Super Shadow in 300WSM on close out for $343. I just about broke my arm getting my wallet out of my pocket. Seems the gun was in the back of the safe and over looked. I really didn't need the gun but for that price I couldn't pass it up. Haven't shot it yet but I'll let you what I think about the 300WSM. Good luck with your 7mm WSM |
RE: 7mm WSM
To longrifle1000: I kind of understand what you mean. It would be better to bump the shoulder back the exact amount so that the casing would headspace on the shoulder. How would you measure that? Doesn't most dies set the casing back to close to minimum? It would have to be exact. If not then the bolt would not close, or it would close tightly? I believe most people shoot factory loads, and I am pretty sure the factory could not know the measurements of all the different chambers? Again it would have to be exact, because the belt would stop the cartridge from going in any farther. Wouldn't it be the same with rimmed cartridges? like the 30-30? I am going to have to look into this. Sounds like fun. Tom.

To Ridge Runner: I agree with what you are saying. However you are not FL resizing the case. All I do is fireform the case, and then neck size. You may be bumping back the shoulder slightly, but you are definitely not sizing the entire case. And the argument for FL sizing is to be able to chamber the casing with ease, the same way factory shells chamber. And you even said it yourself, "the bolt will go down with just a lil resistance".
It has been my experience with the 300 Win Mag that body sizing is necessary for feeding of hot loaded cases, This would bump back the shoulder, and hence return the headspace to the belt. This goes back to my original comment that the 300 Win Mag headspaces on the belt-which I believe is how the manufacturer wished it to be. I like the way you described doing it, and I am going to try it. It sounds like a good idea to me. If I am reading you right you are saying bump the neck up one size, then slowly bring it back to size-thanks for the idea. I will try it. I shoot my 300 WSM single shotonly-so a tacky bolt would not hurt a thing. Tom. |
