Which rifle for the 7mm08?
I have been looking atthe followingrifles chambered in the 7mm08 for another deer rifle.
Remington 700 mountain rifle stainless, laminate Remington SPS Ruger RL ultralight with a dark/ rosewood cap? Beautiful gun I don't need another rifle but I feel the urge to get a new one every year to experiment with. I currently have a ruger, browning, and a stevens. I love my ruger all weather 06 and would like to get the ultra light ruger which is a beautiful gun and feels great. However, I have been wanting to try out a remington since my buddy just picked up a sps and this gun is a shooter. All of this started since I have really gotten fed up with my browning micro medallion 7mm08 because it is not grouping well. I have tried differentammo andmade sureall of my bases and rings aresnug. I want a gun that shoots tight groups. My Ruger is an excellent shooter and I have killed 5 deer with it the past two seasons. I do like rugers but thought about trying the model 700. The mountain rifle and the rugerare lighter and has a shorter barrel than the sps. Will thiseffect performance ? What do you think JamesB since you just bought the sps? Any advice on any of these guns would be appreciated. Borty |
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
I sold a Browning A-Bolt in 7/08 and have regretted selling ever since. That A-Bolt would shoot sub 1" groups all day at 100 yards with many purchased ammo brands.
Give me a hollar when you decide to part with your A-Bolt |
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
If you want a light rifle get the Remington Mountain. My buddy had one and I liked it. Great climbing rifle. If you don't mind a little more weight I would get a Remington CDL it comes with a 24 inch barrel. You will get a little better accuracy and the barrel will not heat up as quickly. It is hard to shootgreat groups with the mountain rifle because the barrel heats up very quickly. Both are excellent hunting rifles.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
I have been considering trading/selling the bowning but it was a gift years ago and will be hard for me to part with. Beautiful gun with engraving and good wood. I just can't figure out what the problem is. It is shooting all over. I just mounted leupold bases and rings with my VXII 3x9x50 and this did not help my accuracy problems. I have shot powerpoints, corelokts, and silver ballistic tips and none of the bullets shoot any better. Any ideas?

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
I had a Ruger Ultralight in .257 Roberts for a while. You need to realize that its a hunting rifle and not a target/varminter. By that I mean that the barrel is pencil thin and heats up quickly. Beautiful handling rifle though and a pleasure to carry all day.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
Borty77,
If I may suggest , get a Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08. If you want a good looking gun, get the stainless / laminate. I have a model 7 in 7mm-08 , walnut / blued. I love it as a deer rifle. I use it in my tower stands, and in my ladder and climbing stands also. It is a short, light , and accurate gun. The 7mm-08 is a great round. I shot a deer a few days ago, at about 130 yards, and it dropped straight down to the ground. Never took another step. I have several other guns I could take, an a- bolt .270, a NEF .243, a ruger m77 stainless / synthetic .308, or a remington 7400 carbine 30.06, but most often you will find me with my model 7. It is just that good. God Bless |
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
my cousin has a mountain rifle in '06 and he loves it, I can tell you that it's very nice to carry. I use a 7mm-08 in a Rem. BDL that's a little bit heavier than the mountain rifle but only by around half a pound. If I were going to buy one new (as I got my rifle essentially brand new for 350) I would definatly look at the MR. For hunting here in WV where everything's real thick it would be the perfect rifle.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
Maybe you should look into the Tikka T3.

Michael T suggested you check out the Model 7 Remingtons, and I am in agreeance with him. They are nice and light, compact and are available in 7mm08. If you prefer the wood and blued look, the Model 7 CDL is a handsome little rig. I own two 7-08s, one a Rem 700 Light Varmint Stainless Fluted (LVSF), which they now only make in Varmint calibers (go figure the name huh?). And I also have a TC Encore in 7-08. Both guns shoot VERY accurately, and if you are a handloader, the 7-08 can be extremely versitale and do things other calibers in factory offerings cannot touch! |
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
Go to Kimber.com and look at their Model 84M or Montana rifle. She's a light weight and she's a beaut. And from what i've read and heard she can shoot.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
I have checked out the CDL model 7 and it is definitely a sweet gun. What is the difference in the mountain rifle and the model 7 besides the stocks and finishes?
|
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
well I know that the mountain rifle has a 22 inch barrel and the model 7 has a 20 inch. Other than that I'm not sure. The MR has a detachable magazine.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
A few of the Savage models would make a very nice deer rifle. They have both synthetic models and wood stocks.
I like the first one: http://savagearms.com/16fhss.htm http://savagearms.com/10fm.htm http://savagearms.com/14AmerClassic.htm |
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
The 14 American Classic is a good rifle, and very accurate.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
You can't go wrong with the SPS..While I don't have one, i've only heard great things about it & it's a great deal for the money.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
IF you are going to buy a Rem glass bed it, get trigger down and free float it then save your money and buy a Browning A-bolt in the 1st place, The micro versions are very nice if you want a short light gun without a pencil thin barrel.
I think Tikka's are the ugliest guns on the market(Just My Op.) but everyone here loves them and talks how accurate they are. I wouldnt take a new Rem if you gave one to me. The older one's are great but the new ones (again just my expericence with them) just suck. The model 7's are pretty though. |
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
Yeah my 2 new (97, 03)700's really suck...they will both group an inch or under just about any time. In fact they will group better on average than my 3 older 700's (78,83,89) Sounds like junk to me... That $10 trigger job really put me in the poor house. To be honest I am about fed up with hearing the bs about the new Remingtons being junk. I have 2 of them and have sighted in at least 10 more and I havent found one that wasnt a pretty darned good shooter right out of the box yet. In fact a couple of them (7-08's) were very nearly one hole guns without even a trigger job. You can have the 710's but the 700's are just as good a shooter as they ever were. 25 years of shooting and owning and hunting with 700's and I currently own 5 (243, 270, 7-08, and 2 30-06's) of them and have yet to ever experience any trouble of any kind.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
I'd get a Tikka T3 or a Browning A-Bolt if it was me. I've owned almost every make/model of bolt guns and those are my 2 favorites. Both have no problems out of the box shooting under MOA when topped with quality optics and handloads (I haven't bought a box of factory ammo in 12 years or longer).

Guess I need to toss this one in the trash can and find an older model. ![]() PS: I just hope I screwed up as bad with my new 7600 as I did with the Mtn LSS.:D firstshot ----------------------------- Make your first shot count! |

Again just expressing my experiences. |
RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
theres a savage model 110 in 7mm 08 , that comes with a scope in a pack

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
My expierence after 40 or so 700 Remingtons Including a couple of the new SPS's would lead me to say that the above statements on the 700 Remington is the biggest load of bunk I have ever read here. Every one I have ever owned, Old or New has shot under an inch when its prefered load was found. Usually the first load I tried. Almost always with Corlokts. Guess its strange how expierences differ. Besides owning close to 50 of them, I have sold another 200 or so when I had my gun shop. Never had to send one back which is more than I can say for most brands.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
I've had three 7-08's. A Browning Micro Hunter, a Sako 75, and currently a model 7.The Sako was my favorite but a little big and heavy. Kind of defeated the purpose of a short action rifle in my thinking so I traded it. My model seven I like a lot. I bought the youth model and put a HS Precision stock on it. With my handloads with 130gr speer bullets it groups easily under an inch. It's short and lite witha 2-7 Leupold scope on it.

RE: Which rifle for the 7mm08?
My 700 CDL in 7-08 is one of the best out-of-the-box shooters I've ever had. A little load development has made it my current sweetheart.
