Reports that I have read show the 338 Federal to be pretty impressive with the 185 TXS. Typical Barnes penetration. I guess time will judge this round as it has with others. I think it will be a very versitile hunting rifle.

Fellows is it just me or doesthe 338 Fed. Vel. for a 210 gr. bullet seem familar to a properly handloaded 8X57

338 Fed 210gr. 2630 fps
8X57 200gr. 2675 fpshttp://www.realguns.com/loads/8x57mmjs.htm
I understand theres a .015 diff. in Dia. but I don't think a Whitetail would notice..

then again 30-06 with a 180gr. bullet(higher SD than the above) @ 2900fps Hornaday LM

Buckeye
Actually, its a proven fact the Hornady Ammo is a lot slower than advertised. The .338 Federal would make a great cartridge for the NEF Handi Rifle's and other single shot rifles, and bolt actions would be great too.

If a fellow handloads and has a Mauser chambered in 8X57,he can beat the 338 Fed. ,and now that they have a 325WSM they are and will be better constructed bullets...The old war horse8X57 looks better and better , with modern powders and high quality bullets...

On the contrary, there have been no new 8mm bullets coming out because of the 325 WSM, the 325WSM will probably have the same fate as the 8mm Rem Mag, and lack of bullets that will hold up at Magnum velocites is the reason.

How many "good" 8mm bullet choisesdo you need??? I've been useing 200NP's in my 8mm for over 20 years now and it's all the bullet i could ask for. (and yes they will hold up to mag. velocities) I've flattened everything from bear and moose, to coyotes, and many manydeer... includeing the 7 point buck below, that i harvested last week...
