Disappointed in my ammo
#1
This weekend I killed a boar with my Brow 270 wsm (which by the way wasn't grouping very well) and the round didn't even go through opposite side of the 130 lb boar[:'(]...I was shooting the Winchester Supreme 130 gr bst's & I though that it would have been plenty. I hit him square in the vitals and he still managed to run about 15 yds. Should I be using different ammo for hogs? any sugestions would be great, thanks.

Agreed on all of the above. If you want pass through, shoot a tougher bullet. Then again, 15 yds isn't that far. I shot a mulie buck at 180 yards with a 200 grain Barnes TSX from a Weatherby 30-378. Plenty of gun and using a tough bullet. Went throught the vitals and busted the opposite shoulder, taking the top of the heart off on the way. The deer ran 40 yds and slid another 20 down the embankment. He was dead on his feet and didn't know it. What more can you do besides a neck or head shot?

Me and my bud took 2 hogs a couple of years back, using his 300 win mag. We were using 150gr corlocks and failed to get a pass through on both hogs at 40 yds. These were 200 and 250lbs. The 250lb'er I shot in the vitals and the one he shot was in the neck. I would expect the one to the vitals not to pass through as this was a pretty thick hog, but the one in the neck ? I think sometimes these fast guns at close range just explode or mushroom way too much, but then you shoot a thin skinned animal like a deer and they dont mushroom. Go figure. I do believe you need a tough bullet for hogs and a rapid expander for deer, but theres has to be a medium. I like Hornady's

Why are you guys so concerned with pass thru's and such? isn't it about destroying the vital organs to ensure the death of the animal, quickly and humanely? Most of your factory soft points arn't designed to go all the way through, they are designed to expand violently and tear up tissue.

my last hog kill was with my .300 Wby. Mag. at roughly 100 yards with a 180 gr. Ballistic Tip. hog ran 15 yards before expiring and the shot went through the vitals, clean through the hog and almost through a 15" diameter pine tree on the other side.

Would you want an arrow to stick half way in a deer or blow through it ? Same thing.
