RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
I am planing on buying a newRifle in the 30-06 caliber bolt actionfor whitetails. I am on a strict budget of about $350. Currently I am looking into getting a Remington 710 model. I have heard a lot of good things about them and a lot of bad things. Some say they are cheap and unrealiable. One of my buddies that shoots a Model 700 says that the 70 shoots just as good as his, not sure which 700 he has but I think its a BDL or something. I really need one that comes with a scope due to the budget scenario. I am also looking at the Savage models, but another buddy of mine owns a Savage model 111 and it looks like it is built really cheap. The bolt is pretty stiff and stuff like that, although I do like the accutrigger. I am currently usin a Remington Model 870 Super Mag 12 GA for my all around hunting and I need a deer rifle. Can someone help me out here that is familiar with the 710 or something cheap that works good?

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
I have a 710 in the .243 caliber. Shoots pretty good. Yeah there are good things and bad things about the 710. Comes with a Bushnell scope and I like it. Yeah it may be a different kind of synthetic but it's good enough for me since i won't be shooting it but a couple times a year. it just depends on how much shooting you will be doing. I got my 710 as a present and I am happy with it. But i am not a gun expert so i could be wrong too.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
I didnt say it was cheap, I said it looks cheap. I have no doings with a Savage therefore I dont know thats whay I ask you guys.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
I was just kidding, anyway, yeah, go with the Savage, very reliable, accurate, and a better bargain than the 710, again, sorry if i sounded like a jerk.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
I have no experance with the 710 so I cant comment on them. But I have shot alot of the savages,110 and 111.I have not seen a bad one yet,all have shot good. You should also look at the Mossberg ATR100.I have a ATR100 in 270 that shoots real good.I bought mine last winter and have under 300.oo dollars in the whole gun with scope and sling that I bought for it.WAL Mart has these guns for 244.00 dollars and they come in 30/06 and 270.I killed my deer this year with it a few weeks ago and it did everything I could have asked from a cheap hunting rifle.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
Although my 710 was given to me as a gift, if I would of had the choice I would have went with the Savage. Personally I think the Savage looks better than the 710. But I can't complain either. Anyone would take a free gun. Even a 710. Plus I killed a nice 8 point buck this past weekend so obviously it does the job. But go what you feel is comfortable. Maybe save up more money and get a Remington 700. Mossbergs are not bad either. I would take one anyday.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
Dway, I'm curious, how far did your buck go after being hit?
|
RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
The 710 works ok, shoots pretty well but has a terrible track record here on these forums. Personally if I was you I would go to place that you plan on purchasing a rifle and try them all out and see which one fits you. Another consideration is the local pawn shop. Chances are you can get a good quality rifle with a scope and a wood stock, something that you can customize as finances allow for your $350 budget. Used is not always bad, sometimes it can be good, very good.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
Man for $350 I would buy a Leupoldscope and put it on whatever rifle you can borrow from a buddy. The scope is THE MOST important part of a hunting rig. A great rifle, with a poor scope is destined for poor results (you can't hit what you can't see), but any well cared for rifle, no matter what manufacturermade it, is capable of minute of deer accuracy and repeatibility with a good set of mounts for a good scope.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
Go with the Savage, a lot of rifle for the price. They are not pretty, but well made, accurate and durable. I own 2 savages, both with accutriggers, and really like them.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
How about a used gun? Do you have an ad bulletin or traders guide available. Always lots of guns for sale around here. Look at the pawn shops, great place to find the bargains.
I hunt with the Remington 700BDL and Ruger M77. Savage makes a good gun, but most everyone has a good gun. Shop around. I'd buy the better used gunverses the cheaper new gun. Just my opinion. |
RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
On your budget I would suggest you go to wal-mart and look at the Mossberg model 200 I think it is. It is made by savage I'm pretty sure. It doesn't have the accutrigger though. Then I would top it with a Nikon scope. You won't be able to buy a top of the line scope but Nikon makes the best of the resonably priced scopes. As stated before opticscan make or break a weapon. If you're not interested in the mossberg I would recommend the savage over the 710 any day.
As for the pawn shops. Around here I look weekly for Rem 700's to make custom guns with. Its rare to find even a rough 700 under $400. |
RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
What about a remington 700 sps?

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
LW,
I own both the 710 package (in 270)and the Savage package (in 243). The 710 is in a camo synthetic stock and is actually a very tough durable stock. The scope on the 710 has been fine through over 1000 rounds now. The receiver on my 710 is the nylon receiver and is not nearly as smooth as the Savage. However I believe the new 710 has a metal receiver. The scope that came with the savage would not focus correctly from day 1. I sent it back to Simmons and not only did they replace it but they upgraded it. Both of these guns shoot great. My groups are similar with both guns. Off1 sandbag up front and shoulder holding the buttI shoot 1.5" 3 shot groups pretty consistantly with factory ammo. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Not great but thats all I can do the way I shoot. The accutriger on the savage is a nice feature. I was able to lighten it up just where I wanted it. This can't be done with the 710. The barell can't be changed on the 710. I'm not sure i'll ever need it but either way it's not possible. I have killed deer with both guns and between these 2 guns and my Marlin 30-30 I have a tough time deciding which one to take each day. All of them have been very reliable in the field and at the range. Good luck in deciding |
RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
I own two Savages and love them both. A 30-06 that I got at a gun show for $250. that will smash clay pigeons at 300 yards all day long. And a Tactical .223 that will do better than that. I think I paid $ 300 for that one. There are a lot of GOOD used weapons out there...............Oh yeah, My Win mod 70, 30-06 Carbine w/ hand checkered walnut circa 1984 I paid $ 300. for that one.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
Well the good news is whatever rifle I decide to choose I will be able to get it at cost from where my dad works. Tomorrow I will behunting withmy buddies Savage Model 111 .270, and I will see how I like it. I am also going to look at a couple of pawn shops around and see whats in store. Yes, I have checked out the Model 700 SPS, the only down fall is it has no scope, but with the price at cost I will see what I can do. I am going to get my dad to check the cost tomorrow at work, and I will let you guys know what the price is that I can get it for.

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
Personally, I ain't nuts about the 710 or the Savage guns.
However, ifI had to choose/use one or the other, I'd take the Savage any day! I think the 710 is cheap junk. Joe |

RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
The Savage actions are retarded! Too rough.
I like Remington SPS, or a used Ruger. A new Mossberg ATR is a good gun for the money, it has a smooth action. |
RE: RIFLE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.
I think im gonna spend more and get an SPS. Ill just have to use the good ole Super Mag until I can afford a scope.
