Man I just lapped my scope rings, used aligning tool and last but not least a cross hair leveling tool. What a difference it made!!!! All are from wheeler mfg. and not to expensive.I highly recommend them to all.

I do the same when I can, but takes forever. Takes me around and hour or more to lap. I do lap both top and bottom pieces however. Some only lap the botton piece of the rings. Then I have to cold blue the inside of the rings. All in all, about a 2 hour job or more.
I seen some pretty aggressive lapping kits lately in Rifle mag that might be quicker. I also own the wheeler.

When I lap rings (bottom 1/2 only) it usually takes 15 minutes. I lap until there is 90% or more contact. Mostly what I am trying to accomplish is to get rid of the high spots that will leave marks on the scope. I have never had a scope move in the rings but then again I don't shoot a 458 win either.
