RE: Ruger No 1 .375 H&H or HOWA 1500 .338?

I've never shot the .338 though I've always wanted one. We do have a .375 a friend of ours bought and can't shoot because he is afraid of the recoil. It is the same exact type you are asking about laminated stock an stainless barrel. If you can handle the recoil it is a excellent gun. Though you get a headache after several shots from it.

The Howa Lightning in SS runs $450.

The Ruger #1 SS runs $750.

I would have no issues with getting the #1 if that is what I wanted. But if it was just for shooting I would get the 338 win mag. But it would not be a Howa. I would spend the extra $100 or so and get a Tikka T3 Lite in SS. JMHO of course.

I would go with the .338, as it will destroy anything on the western hemisphere. I would only suggest the .375 if looking to liveor hunt in Alaska or Africa often.

Magnum Man, what kind of question is this supposed to be? If expense isn't an issue, hell get them both! And as for the reply about living in Alaska, if you can't make do with a 338 a 375 will not help much. The only way a 338 would be inadiquate is if you can't hit with it, and if someone can't shoot a 338 then a 375 is out of the question.

As for the suggestion to get the Tikka lite, I would think twice as the recoil would be nasty!

When I fired 300 grain bullets in my .338, I really could not tell much difference in recoil between that and a Remington 375 H&H. But the 338 will shoot flatter and longer with the 225 grainers. The 375 is getting to a different piece... alot more frontal area. Bigger hole. I have a clue you won't be using this much in Arkansas, so I would let the critter and distance be my guide.
