ORIGINAL: BrutalAttack

H&R would probably be your best bet.
Should I just contact them directly or ask my local shop? Have any idea of price?

You can't put a rifle barrel on the shotgun frames. You can however put a shot barrel on a rifle frame. When in doubt, call the H&R/NEF customer service. Have the serial number handi so they can dtermin which frame you have. They have a site www.hr1871.com

You have to send the reciever to them for the barrel fitting. Most rifle barrels are from 80-100 dollars.

You could get a used Mossberg pump. They're worth what little money theycost.

The H&R's are real nice guns for the money. You are worried that if she doesn't like it, you haven't lost much. The problem sometimes with not buying the right thing in the first place is guaranteeing she won't like it. Unless it's a surprise (and depending on how good a girlfriend she is), take her to the gunshop and put some in her hands.
You can get a Remington 870 slugster with cantilever rifled barrel for $325.
Nobody can't like that...

Either the Mossberg or the Ultra slug hunter would work very well. Just go with a 20 ga instead of the 12.
