RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
just depending on what you want the bullet to do. if you want to be able to get virtually all the meat use a bonded bullet such as winchesters accubond or remingtons scirocco bonded bullets. which a soft pointed bullet would also do the same such as core-lokts and super x. if you want a bullet for deer instant stopping power then i would shoot a nosler ballistic tip. these will sometimes mess up a shoulder of meat but when they hit the deer goes down. you can get em in winchester, remington, federal, a lot of factory loads. with these if you never want the possibility of losing that buck of a lifetime, the ballistic tip is what you need. ive saw deer get shot in the butt with one before and it fell to the grouund dead.

I like the Factory Federal BLUE BOX 150 grain ammo. They are loaded with Speer GS bullets. They do a good job without excess meat damage.

RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
If your looking for hand loads try the Hornady 150gr Interbonds or 165gr SST. I also shoot 150gr barnes triple X.
Not sure on factory loads as I don't use them. |
RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
Take your pick 150-180 will work fine with 06 & whitetails. Being you don't expect to shoot further than 200 yards I'd probably lean to the 165-180 side of things, as you really don't need to worry about longer range shots and trajectory gains of 150 gr bullet. I'd also personally pick a flat based bullet vs a boattail, sono need for a polymer tip or bonded either unless you just want to try one. Something like a hornady interlock sp, nosler partion.etc in 165 or 180 would be about perfect.
Good luck |

You either love them or hate them
I lovethe 150 grn. Ballistic Tip. |
RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
Haven't used my 06' yet, but i had good results with Federal Vital- Shok year before last. I was using the 130gr Gamekings in my 270. It slammed all three, with complete pass through and massive wound channels. The first was at 6yds and the last was over 150. So they work well close-up and atlonger ranges.

RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
I shoot a Remington 165 boattail accutip. I have never had a deer go farther then 20 yards after hitting it. They seem to be where I 'm aiming from 250 yards on in the 25 yards. Good luck and have agreat hunt

What's the big difference between the flat based bullets and the boat-tails, I know the boattail's better for longer shots, but what about performance on game?

RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
shepdog, typically a flat based bullet will lead to better penetration as a result of more weight retention than a comparable BT design. Exceptions to this rule ie:barnes x and tsx all copper where both boast in excess of 90% weight retention. On deer it rarily matters, unless real close at high MV or hitting square on the shoulder bone, this is where a tougher bullet will work better with less meat damage.
BTW my favorite deer bullet is still the NBT, though I expect thatI may have to make 200 plus yard shots on any given day i hunt deer with a CF.I have taken deer with it as close as 30 yards and never lost one but it does make a bigger hole when it strikes at High MV andpenetration is reduced when it meets heavy bone b/c of therapid expansion design. |
RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
I can't speak to the ballistics of any bullet, but nothing has walked away from my 165 gr Federal Premium Sierra Boat Tails in the past15 years. I just bought a new .06 and the Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Bear Claws shoot the best out of this gun.
I hunt whitetail usually at less then 100 yards. |
RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
I used to use remington ammo from walmart.

If your hunting whitetails,200 yards and under,165gr.Sierra boattails are your best bet..... This is my personal opinion but Sierras are the most accurate bullet on the market You don't need to spend that extra expense on bonded bullets that give you better down range terminal ballistics and performance... Cause from the muzzle out to 350yrdsthese bullets will do just fine on deer... |
RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
for my 30-06 savage I use a 180 grain federal. it seems to hold a good pattern.
|
RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
I use Corelokt 150gr psp and have piled up all 4 deer that I have shot. They pattern well out of my ruger.

RE: looking for a 30-06 bullet
Ifall you're after are whitetails, and your shots are going to be less than 300 yards, it makes no sense to spend extra money on premium ammo. Just get a box of 150 Gr. Winchester Power Points, or Remington Express Core Lokt's. You'll save a few dollars that you can spend at the shooting range honing your marksmanship skills. You don't really need the expensive stuff until you take a couple steps up in the size of game you're after.
