RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
The first one I hunted with was my father's 30-30, and then my grandpa's 30-30.
The first rifle I ever bought was a 7mag. I don't even hunt with that rifle anymore. It performs well on deer, but not any better than my 308 or 30-06, and it is much, much louder. The last rifle I bought was a 308. I do most of my hunting with it now....little recoil, not excessively loud, very accurate, and hammers deer like lightening. |
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
My first was a Remingtom model 700 in .270 Win. Got it for 8 th grade graduation. Don't use it as much as I used to but still have fun with it. My boys will probably end up with it when they are old enough.

RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
.22 rabbit single shot, passed down from grandpa. I refinished it years ago and never plan on getting rid of it, though it sees very few shots anymore.
First CF was .308win 760 Rem,borrowed from my uncle and used for my first hunting season at 12.I bought myfirst oneat 13 with paper route money - 7600 rem. in .270win (still own it today in hopes of passing it on to my daughter or nephews). |

RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
Does a Crosman 760 count? My first rifle was a Ruger 10/22 when I was 8 or 9, then I saved up enuf money to buy a Ruger M77 MKII 30-06 when I was 11.

RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
First rifle was a Winchester M 69A .22 Rimfire...My folks got it for me for Christmas the year I was 12 ( 1962)...I still have it and have even managed to avoid losing the 5 shot clip all these years...
My first centerfire rifle was a Rem M722 in .222...Bought it secondhand for $65 in 1964...I still have it and it is in excellent condition, albeit refinished and reblued... My first deer/big game rifle was a M1895 Chilean Mauser in 7X57...I bubba-ized it, had the barrel bobbed to 21 inches, the bolt altered and installed a new safety, aTimney trigger, and a Weaver K2.5 on an S&K Instamount.....Killed a few whitetails with it and then peddled it when I bought a Ruger M77 in 7 x 57 to replace it... |
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
my very first gun to hunt with was a 22lr for rabbits and also a 410 shotgun for grouse (both were my dads). The when I was able to hunt deer he let me use is win model 94 30-30. Used that for 2 years and then my grandfather gave me a Sav Mod99 .300 savage that I used for a few years. I loved that 300sav. I plan on using both that and the 30-30 for when my kids get older if they want to hunt.
the first gun I ever bought was a savage heavy barrel 22-250 and 2 years ago i bought a savage Model 111 in 30-06 |
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
Remington 22lr. repeater with a clip. This was a nice little rifle. Sure wish I still had it...
|
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
My Grandpa gave me his old Winchester Pump with the exposed hammer. Can't recall the model number but Taurus makes them now. It shot 22 Short, Long or Long rifle. I think I was 11 at the time. He also gave each Grandson a Daisy BB gun for Xmas when we were six.
My first deer rifle was the Old Eddiestone 30-06. A Army Surplus store was selling them for 20.00 each. |
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
Savage M24 .22lr/410 O/U at age 12. Win. Model 94 30-30 a year later. Wish I still had them, but back then (late 50's) I used them for trades to move on and up. I've since bought replacements for them, but they are not the originals. Oh, well.....live and learn.......
|
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
I started with a 30/30 and have tried many calibers to come full circle back to it. There is nothing in east Texas or northwest Oklahoma where I hunt that a well place shot from a 30/30 won't take down.

|
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
Daisy 840 that I musta shot 3 million bb's thru. "Graduated" (??) to a Model 37a Winchester .410. First rifle was a Remington 700 ADL in 243.
|
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
I cut my teeth on a lot of other peoples rifles, 22's, 30/30's, but my very own first rifle was a 1903 Steyr Mannlicher that had been rebarreled from the original 6.5 X 54 MS to 7 X 57.
Took me weeks of saving to buy it in 1967 for around $70. Still the smoothest bolt I've ever worked. Wears nice express sights only as the split bridge doesn't beg for drilling and tapping. It can be done, but I'm gonna leave the way I bought it. |
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
First rifle I ever shot was an old Remington single shot bolt action .22. My Dad still has it. First rifle I ever purchased was a Remington ADL in .270 Win.
|
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
My first rifle was a .30-06. First gun I bought for myself when I was 13 was a Winchester 370 Jr. 20 gauge.
I got the .30-06, Remington Model 742, with a Bushnell Banner 3-9x scope, at an Ace Hardware Store when I was 15. I was a bit on the small side, and that thing gave me a serious flinch. I couldn't shoot it worth a crap. One of the reasons my son's first centerfire rifle is a .243... |
RE: Caliber of Your First Rifle
Rem model 7 in 6mm..tackdriver--still have it (20 years later)and stillis my number one gun for whitetails in wooded or semi-open country
