Default Ammo for .308?

I just purchased a new Savage in .308 with the accutrigger. Up to now, I've always hunted with a Remington 700 ADL in .270.

Ok, I know that every rifle will "prefer" certain ammunition and all that, but my question is still this.....I hunt in North Central Texas and I mainly hunt whitetail. I will also shoot an occasional hog, coyote, or whatever.

My shots could honestly range between 0-200 yards......On a very rare occassion or hunting someone else's lease, maybe longer shots. Regardless, I'm wondering which ammunition (in .308) and which weight I should shoot?

For what it is worth, I tend to prefer "Premium" ammo and I use to shoot the Accubond in the .270 (my Remington preferred Winchester for some reason). All opinions and/or experience is welcome!

Either 150 or 165gr bullets will(shouldin a308 anyways)group well and pack the punch you need for wtails. Bullet styles like the partition, barnes TSX, or nosler solid base will git 'er done.

Get some 165 grain Hornady interlocks. Cheap accurate and perform very well.

We use 165 grain and they shoot excellent. We have target practiced out to 400 yds with them and they are very accurate and the premium brand bullets work great on deer and hogs.

Although .308 Winchesters tend to do best with bullets in the 150 and 165 grain weight range, I have had great luck with the 180 gr. Speer Grand Slam. This bullet is relatively short for its weight and has superb expansion characteristics. In my gun, WW 748 gave me 2760 fps.

why 150 165 over 180 grains ??

looking at the ballistics the 180 looks like abetter choice.

debating on which to shoot

my gun shoots the 150 and the 180 great

The only issue with the 180's in the .308 Winchester is that when you are seating to the standard short action magazinelength of 2.800, it is necessary to seat most 180 gr. bullets pretty deep - reducing the effective case capacity of the cartridge. This is particularly true with long bullets like the Ballistic Tip, Accubond, or Barnes X. Not much of a problemwith round nose bullets or shorter spitzers like the Speer Grand Slam.

And when you start comparing the ballistics of the 30/06 factory rounds and the .308, you will notice that they areabout the same with 150 and 165 gr. bullets - butthe .308falls astep short with most 180 and 200 gr. projectiles - duemore to this seating depth issue than the difference in case capacity between the two cartridges.
