My own gun
Hello,
I was wanting your guyses' opinions of what would be a good rifle for me. I am a teenager and I was thinking of a .243 or a 6.5x55 Swede. I'm not looking somuch for a caliber suggestion as mmuch as a brand and model suggestion. I am still open to caliber suggestions though. Thanks in advance. |
RE: My own gun
Youi did not state the prupose for the rifle, so I would suggest either a 223 Rem or 22-250 Rem for small critters/varmints. There are quite a few for deer size game such as 243 Win, 260 Rem, 308 Win , 7-08 Rem for the short actions and the 25-06 Rem, 270 Win, 280 Rem and 30-06 Springfield.
As far as rifle makes... Savage, Tikka, Ruger,Remington,Winchester, Sako, Weatherby,Howaall make great rifles. The Savage seems to have a good internet following and would most likely be the most inexpensive. If I was in your shoes I would get a Savage in 25-06 and call it done. |

RE: My own gun
I was mostly looking for a deer rifle, but it would be nice to have a gun I could use for several things besides deer.
Also, I thought that the .270 was supposed to have some pretty bad recoil. Is that true? Another thing, I really don't like Savage's rifle's bolt-actions, and I'm looking for a bolt-action. The bolts aren't smooth in my opinion, and I also was wondering about the price ranges on some rifles. Hope I'm not asking too much, thanks. |
RE: My own gun
i would go with a remington model 7 in rem 260 or 7mm-08
i bought a used one (260 for my wife)stainless and synthetic for 350$ and i love it, low recoil, good shooter i think the ruger compact can be bought in the 6.5X55sweede, and on the charts it and the 260 almost mirror each other |
RE: My own gun
That sounds good, but I'm too big for compact models now.
But a regular Ruger should come in 6.5x55 Swede. |
RE: My own gun
The Ruger all Weather comes in 6.5x55. You could not make a better choice for deer and varmits.

RE: My own gun
.243 savage, any savage model.

RE: My own gun
I'd go with DoublA's advice.
My very first bought by me,owned by me was a Ruger M-77 25-06 Rem(would still have it if it wasn't stolen). You can't beat the savages or the Stevens rifles. The 25-06 can do the 270 can do and with less recoil, well they are pretty close. 117 gr 25-06 vs a 130gr270 win the 25-06 has 20.3 in drop at 400 and the 270 has 20.0 Ft/lbs is the 25-06 @ 1200 vs 1290 in the 270 win. at 400 yds. Both great deer rounds. BBJ |
