My own gun

Hello,

I was wanting your guyses' opinions of what would be a good rifle for me. I am a teenager and I was thinking of a .243 or a 6.5x55 Swede.
I'm not looking somuch for a caliber suggestion as mmuch as a brand and model suggestion. I am still open to caliber suggestions though.

Thanks in advance.

RE: My own gun

Youi did not state the prupose for the rifle, so I would suggest either a 223 Rem or 22-250 Rem for small critters/varmints. There are quite a few for deer size game such as 243 Win, 260 Rem, 308 Win , 7-08 Rem for the short actions and the 25-06 Rem, 270 Win, 280 Rem and 30-06 Springfield.
As far as rifle makes... Savage, Tikka, Ruger,Remington,Winchester, Sako, Weatherby,Howaall make great rifles. The Savage seems to have a good internet following and would most likely be the most inexpensive. If I was in your shoes I would get a Savage in 25-06 and call it done.

RE: My own gun

I was mostly looking for a deer rifle, but it would be nice to have a gun I could use for several things besides deer.

Also, I thought that the .270 was supposed to have some pretty bad recoil. Is that true?

Another thing, I really don't like Savage's rifle's bolt-actions, and I'm looking for a bolt-action.
The bolts aren't smooth in my opinion, and I also was wondering about the price ranges on some rifles. Hope I'm not asking too much, thanks.

RE: My own gun

i would go with a remington model 7 in rem 260 or 7mm-08

i bought a used one (260 for my wife)stainless and synthetic for 350$ and i love it, low recoil, good shooter

i think the ruger compact can be bought in the 6.5X55sweede, and on the charts it and the 260 almost mirror each other

RE: My own gun

That sounds good, but I'm too big for compact models now.
But a regular Ruger should come in 6.5x55 Swede.

The Ruger all Weather comes in 6.5x55. You could not make a better choice for deer and varmits.

.243 savage, any savage model.

I'd go with DoublA's advice.
My very first bought by me,owned by me was a Ruger M-77 25-06 Rem(would still have it if it wasn't stolen).
You can't beat the savages or the Stevens rifles. The 25-06 can do the 270 can do and with less recoil, well they are pretty close.
117 gr 25-06 vs a 130gr270 win
the 25-06 has 20.3 in drop at 400 and the 270 has 20.0
Ft/lbs is the 25-06 @ 1200 vs 1290 in the 270 win. at 400 yds.
Both great deer rounds.

Nothing at all wrong with a Remington Model 700 in .243. They're on sale at Academy right now for $286. I've got one and it's a tack driver. My son, who is 13, got a Model 7 in .243 for his 12th birthday, and he likes it a lot.

your gonna have to work hard to beat the remington 700 sps in 243 for deer and varmints. the caliber is near perfect for the listed purposes and the recoil should be pretty easy on teenager like you and myself.

Remington M-700. Good luck.

younggun...get a RUGER in 06 and get back to us

younggun308 10-12-2006 12:13 AM

RE: My own gun

Just wanted to make sure you meant 25-06 and not 30-06.
It all depends on what's available at the shop. See, I'm looking for a used rifle, because I'm still saving up for one, and if a Ruger is one of those choices, I'll consider it quite heavily. Although I was thinking more of a used Remington ADL. I will see later what is availablewhen I have the sufficient funds for buying a rifle. If there is a Ruger there, It'll be pretty hard to choose.;)Yes, when I buymy rifle this upcomingJanuary, I will get back to you guys, and with some pictures!:D

I would stay away from the Ruger only because it requires upgrading the trigger. The .243 would make a great starter cartridge but before you make that decision try and see if you know anyone that has a .308. I think you'll be much happier with it since it would be cheaper to shoot and is very accurate.

statjunk....this Ruger trigger thing is highly overated....any trigger..pull and ...bang....bang...bang......but if folks wanna spend the money???...Why wouldnt Ruger rework triggers(modify) and jack up the price...certainly they would rathermake the money, than to see gunsmiths or tinkerers make the dough..something to think about

I own several Rugers...as do alot of folk..and havent had trigger work and are shootin just fine thank you

RE: My own gun

Ruger rifles don't "require trigger jobs"....that's a bunch of BS.

Look for Ruger or Remington, in that order. Both are great rifles, and ready to hunt with out of the box.

As for caliber, anything from 25 to 30 caliber will do you really well. Don't worry about it as much as bullet type. That said, if you can get a 308, 30-06, 7mm-08 or 270, go for it1

good luck

RE: My own gun

Too big now? How big is that ? I shoot a remington model 7 in 7mm - 08, and it is probably my favorite gun. I also have a browning a - bolt medallion in .270, I have a NEF .243 single shot, and I have a Ruger M77 stainless / synthetic in .308, and a remington model 7400 carbine in 30.06. So with all that to choose from , why do I choose the rem. model 7, in 7mm-08? Because it is a great calibur, in a small easy to handle and point gun, that moves around easily in a tree stand or box stand.

And I am a 42 year old full grown man. And I have not out grown it. I have only grown to appreciate what makes a gun great.

And the 7mm-08 is one of the best rounds going. Flat shooting to 300+ yards, and has very managible recoil.

So there is my opinion. Good luck and good hunting.

I think that he took the word compact to mean Youth model.

My choice for deer and varmints would be a 25-06.It will kill any deer that a 270 win will, and it is a better choice for varmints. If elk or moose are in your future,I would change that to a 7mm-08.

I'd go with a Remington or a Ruger in 7mm-08. I would think a good used Rem 700adl could be found for around $300-$400 with scope. I have a Rem 700adl in 270win and this has been my go to gun for years. Have several brands and cal. of rifles and the 700 is the one I grab when going deer hunting!!!! Zeak

Ruger 6.5mmSwede

younggun308 10-15-2006 09:44 AM

RE: My own gun

If I were to come across a Ruger in 6.5x55mm Swede, I'd consider it heavily, but my budget will force me to get a used rifle, and I'm afraid that there might not be a used 6.5x55 Swede for sale, since the Swede is a more rare caliber. From what I've heard, it can be used on, varmits, deer, and elk, and perhaps moose.

However, I find that the chances of me finding a 6.5x55 are slim, it would be better to think of a caliber that I could be assured of finding at a large retailer. The nearest dealer in my area iscalledBenton Shooter's Supply. It's inBenton, Tennessee.
There is another one in Athens, Tennessee, which I haven't checked out yet, but me and my unclewent earlier to Benton Shooter's Supply, and I found out that I liked the Remington actions.
I didn't quite remember what I thought of the Ruger actions though, since the only bolt-action RugerI noticed was the new frontier rifle, and it had an outrageuous price tag! So I didn't really look at it much. The rest were mini-14's. Next time, I'll look closer.

However, I really am leaning towards a 7mm-08, since I'veheard that it can be used for varmits, deer, elk, and even moose. And, it's light on recoil, accurate, and has a flat trajectory.
I think that sounds like the right gun for me.
I'll keep a special lookout for one. I am now more certain than any other time about what gun I want, but one question remains, should I get a Remington ADL, or SPS? I need answers on that, because I see no difference in the two, and I wonder which one would be better and why.

You guys are really helping me out here, don't stop!

You are never too big for small rifles!!! I have too many big ones and am going smaller now!! ( I am200 lbs and 5'10", no prob with recoil, small guns just are handy!) I am looking at getting a ruger compact as we speak...

You can order it through any walmart for about 510 OTD depending on state sales tax....thats about as cheap as a bolt rifle comes...
