The model 66 is a K frame, a medium size frame. (I also have one in a 4" barrel.) The N frame is the "large" frame such as the 44 and 41mag. J frame are some of the .32cal, 22cal, and 38specials (but are also in the K frame size). The believe the letters have more to do with the physical size of the frame, and not necessarily the caliber. Rather than calling it small, medium, large etc, the just use J,K/L, and N. Don't quote me on that though.

Pauly your S&W M66 is a "K" Frame. Indyhunter summed it up well. The "J' frames are the small snubbies for the most part. The "K" frame is the medium size. The "L" frame took up the slack between the "K" and "N" frames. The "N" is the biggest frame size used for the larger calibers. Some years back if I'm not mistaking S&W made a "I" frame which was simular to the "J"frame. Not sure but I think the "I' frame is a little smaller then the "J "frame. Not sure how the letter designations came about but have been using them for several years. Soarkrebel can probably fill you in more about these Smith's. Ruger Redhawk

The "L" frames are the 586 and 686's. they are a little beefier then the 66's and 19's. supposed to handles more 357 mag rounds.
Now they did make a "N" frame (large ) 357 the 27 and 627.
And they also make the model 60 ,which is a "J " frame in 357 mag . but they were recently. the little frames shouldnt be used to shoot alot of mags.
Ruger i'm not sure about an I frame . i would be lying if i said anything about it existing or not .cause i don't know.
I have a 19 just like yours paulyseggs the 19 is just carbon steel blued or nickel. nice gun for home protection or carry.

Soarkrebel,I'm sure they made an "I "frame revolver.Last time I went to my dealer I think I saw one there and he had it marked as a "I "frame. I couldn't tell you what model it was or caliber. Next time I go in there I'll have to see if it's still there and what the strange creature is.I know I'm not getting it mixed up with Colt's "I" frames.I thought for sure you would be familiar with it.Hard to fool you when it comes to Remington's and Smith's.

ruger if it is smaller than a j frame i wouldnt have ever paid much attention to them. i used to have books but the dang things are still packed up. in a few years i'll get all settled in.
you know i like bigger 454?
But smith has made guns for so long i always learn something new they made. they also have made so many special run guns it's hard to now them all. i once had a 686 black stainless but i can't find them in any books. i had one but wasnt impressed so i sold it. now i wish i had it back.

Soark, I went by my dealer's today and forgot all about checking on that "I"frame.I looked in a couple year old Gun Traders Guide and didn't see one there. Of course the G.T.G. isn't much of a publication.I have another Ruger coming. Should be here Friday.Tell you about it in next email to you....... Ruger Redhawk
