I own both a 280 and a 270, you may not agree with me on this but, it is a fact that anything a 270 can do, a 280 can do it better. For one thing if you look at the loading data on the 270 it does not compare to the ballistics of the 280 which is loaded almost, and can achieve 30.06 status. I have been a huntingguide for 38 years, 15 of them have been as a Profressional Hunter in Africa. Only about 6 years ago the 270 met bore specs for hunting thin skin animals on the plains, the main problem was, and is the bullet weight, and the winds. However, the 280 was prefered. Of course the 30.06 was the better, and the choice of all, the 300 win mag. I always carried a 375 H&H Mag. on plains hunting, and the 416 Rigby on the Big 6. I have taken Black Bear withthe 270 & 280and have taken several Elk as well, yet I know that the 280 was the better choice. My prefered Cal. for these animals is the 338.06. But it will come down to what you have, and what you prefer. Which ever you consider remember the animal, and make your kill clean, and quick.

Simply said, a 280 is a slightly underpowered 7mm in a necked down 30-06 case. The same bullets you reload your 7mm with are the ones you load your 280 cartridges with. The 280 has a very slight overall edge on trajectory and velocity. Very slight. I like being different sometimes so I'd prolly go with a 280. One reason is that I could buy lots of .284 cal bullets and load for both rifles with them, since a own a 7mm saum. I have a buddy who uses a 280 for deer hunting and loves it.
If you reload and also own a 7mm mag, it's a no brainer to go with the 280.

Im in no way knocking the 270. The difference in the 2 is really nothing.I'd as soon have either one.

just a quick point

a 280 cartridge won't chamber in a 270 rifle

BUT a 270 cartridge will chamber in a 280 rifle with very very bad results

just a note of caution

I seriously doubt if you killed a critter that it would know the difference between those two cartridges.

I'd definately give the nod to the .280 if you reload. Greater bullet selection. Also, the 7x64 Brenneke is extremely similar to the .280. The Speer manual even indicates loading data is interchangeable. However, the 7x64 predates the .270 by six years. You could say the 7mm/30-06 case variants were used before the.270 was created by Winchester. Also, as much as I like the 7x64 (loaded with 156 gr Oryx), I would not really call it an ideal elk cartridge.

Good luck,
CE

I've used them both a lot, and i ended upbuilding a custom280 and selling my 270's..... The reason was simple for me, as 99% of my hunting at that time was in Alaska.I found the 7mm bullets did a better job on "bigger" animials, but for deer on down one cal. is as good as the other,as long asyou match the bullet to the game.

Thanks for the site, I know several of the guys in in there.I miss Africa very much, and look forward to returning some day. I was born in So. La. and raised there till I was 17, then went in Army and spent2 1/2years in Vietnam,in theSpecial Forces as a Sniper. Came out in 69 took a trip with my dad to Africa decided to stay. Did my apprenticeship for two years, took my exams for Professional Hunter and got it, and stayed there for 13 moreyears, then cameback and bought this home in Arkansas.I have been back several times to guide hunts, and each time I go backto Africa its changed in some way. Oh well enough walk down memory lane. Hows your deer season looking?
