Soark, You wouldn't really want that nasty ol'e Winchester chambered in that 264 Mag would you?.All jokes aside it is a nice rifle but with all the other great calibers available, it wouldn't be one of my top choices.The availability of ammunition and the price you pay with the life of the barrel just isn't worth it to me. I have dies and quite a bit of new brass.The price was right so I grabbed it.I would have never bought it if it wasn't a good buy.I've had a few people want to buy it but it doesn't eat anything.I just wish it was a Ruger , so it could keep the other Ruger's company LOL. ....... i bought a Win mod 70 .264 this summer for $200 and a full box of old shells both in real good shape. i had it for about a week, never fired it and sold it to a guy i work with for $300.

i didn't know that you guys were interested in them.
the guy i sold it to was talking about selling it cause he can't find shells for it without having to order them.

My Dad has one that he bought new and always talked high about it. I got a good deal on one so I bought one, Both are winchesters, Mine has no floor plate from the factory. I have many 70's and never seen one without the plate, Maby special order from win. ? I used the 140 rem. core lok which worked well but wanted a premium bullet so I bought Barnes X in 120gr but haven't put them together yet, They should work good.. Bill

I have a pre-64 model 70 in .264 that I have had for over 30 years.I have always loved that old gun.I have shot this gun ,I don't even know how much (lots) and it still shoots as good as it ever did.I don't use it much anymore.I use my model 70 7 mag.I still use 140 gr. bullets.I think the barrel thing is like a 220 swift .If you use really hot food the barrel life drops quick.

None of the 264 calibers will ever be more popular as they are just too close to the 270's and 7mm's.

I have been hearing a lot of things about people using the 6.5-06 for 1000 yard shooting lately.Most of it has been really good.

I would say the .264 Win Mag just tread too close on the heels of the .270 Win. In sporter length barrels it didn't offer much in the way of a performance gain, and it does shoot out barrels pretty quickly.

To me, this seems like a case similar to the .284 Win, where another splendid cartridge was doomed from the start because it was trying to compete with &quot;The Great&quot; .270 Win. Perhaps if both had been positioned differently (and the .284 had been introduced in a bolt action rifle), they may have faired better. It is a shame that both are headed for obsolescence, especially the very sensible and practical .284.

I have hunted with my Win. model 70 in .264 for a lot of years. I shoot several rounds through it at the range each summer then usually knock off a couple critters in the fall with one shot each. I have killed with it:whitetail, mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn, black bear, moose, elk, coyote and a few grouse (head shots).

It doesn't shoot quite as small groups as it once did but that could be the opperator.
