Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
Why are they not more popular?

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
barrel life is short there are no free lunches with high speed bullets for the guy who shoots about 50 rounds a year there is no problem but use this round more than average you may have trouble from whatI read when remington work up a loading data they went through more that one barrel .

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
The main reason is the 7mm Rem Mag stole all the 264 Win Mags thunder.
Though the 264 Win Mag has a reputation for burning out barrels, with todays better materials I don't think the rep is entirely deserved. Edited by - frizzellr on 11/07/2002 14:15:23 |
RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
Frizzelr..i agree with you on the timing was bad on its initial introduction. I doubt it has anymore noticeable barrel wear than a 7 mag or a 257 mag or something along those lines. I am betting it has quite a bit of muzzle blast though and should probably be shot out of 26" minimum barrels. At this point it is a custom proposition since most mfrs don't chamber them anymore .

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
I read somewhere, it might have been Cartridges of the World, that the 264 Win Mag has tremendous muzzle blast and 270 Win ballistics in shorter barrels. I have never had the chance to shoot one to find out. I am sure it would be a fine cartridge in the right barrel length in a new stainless barrel.

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
In an OLD Speer manual it states that there has been reports that in a 264 Win Mag as few as 500 factory rounds fired and the barrels have been shot out.Reduces performance to the 270 Win class. It also says what Frizzellr said that the 7mm Remington Mag's introduction took away from the 264.The 264 is a flat shooting cartridge ideal for western hunting. For about 20 years now I've owned a Winchester Model 70 chambered in the 264 Win Mag which is still unfired. RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
The .264 is ideal for western shooting in a 26" barrel, and is limited somewhat to game not much larger than big mulies due to the nonavailability of factory lods with bullets of over 140 grains. When it is shot from barrels of 24" or less, it really does NOT outperform the .270 Winchester. Therefore, the .264 is more of a specialized chambering, and is not as "all-around" as the 7mm Rem. Mag., .30/'06, or .270!

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
I have been thinking about picking up a used Ruger 1b in some magnum chambering and screwing on a 28" custom barrel on it and chambering it for something along those lines. This would be a long range Mulie gun and nothing else.

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
Soark, You wouldn't really want that nasty ol'e Winchester chambered in that 264 Mag would you?.All jokes aside it is a nice rifle but with all the other great calibers available, it wouldn't be one of my top choices. The availability of ammunition and the price you pay with the life of the barrel just isn't worth it to me. I have dies and quite a bit of new brass. The price was right so I grabbed it.I would have never bought it if it wasn't a good buy.I've had a few people want to buy it but it doesn't eat anything.I just wish it was a Ruger , so it could keep the other Ruger's company LOL. ....... RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
My Dad has one that he bought new and always talked high about it. I got a good deal on one so I bought one, Both are winchesters, Mine has no floor plate from the factory. I have many 70's and never seen one without the plate, Maby special order from win. ? I used the 140 rem. core lok which worked well but wanted a premium bullet so I bought Barnes X in 120gr but haven't put them together yet, They should work good.. Bill

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
I have a pre-64 model 70 in .264 that I have had for over 30 years.I have always loved that old gun.I have shot this gun ,I don't even know how much (lots) and it still shoots as good as it ever did.I don't use it much anymore.I use my model 70 7 mag.I still use 140 gr. bullets.I think the barrel thing is like a 220 swift .If you use really hot food the barrel life drops quick.

None of the 264 calibers will ever be more popular as they are just too close to the 270's and 7mm's.

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
I have been hearing a lot of things about people using the 6.5-06 for 1000 yard shooting lately. Most of it has been really good.

RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
I would say the .264 Win Mag just tread too close on the heels of the .270 Win. In sporter length barrels it didn't offer much in the way of a performance gain, and it does shoot out barrels pretty quickly.
To me, this seems like a case similar to the .284 Win, where another splendid cartridge was doomed from the start because it was trying to compete with "The Great" .270 Win. Perhaps if both had been positioned differently (and the .284 had been introduced in a bolt action rifle), they may have faired better. It is a shame that both are headed for obsolescence, especially the very sensible and practical .284. Good Dogwork and Good Hunting |
RE: Why is the 264 winchester not more popular
I have hunted with my Win. model 70 in .264 for a lot of years. I shoot several rounds through it at the range each summer then usually knock off a couple critters in the fall with one shot each. I have killed with it:whitetail, mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn, black bear, moose, elk, coyote and a few grouse (head shots).
It doesn't shoot quite as small groups as it once did but that could be the opperator. Robin |
