A friend of mine that thoroughly abuses his gear bought a Lightning 1500 Stainless/Synthetic in 243 about 4 years ago. Put about a thousand shot throughit so far with no probs. On that I got one in 308 and just added another in 243. Love them.:D

I own a Weatherby Vangaurd in 300 WBY Mag. and it is my understanding the rifles are actually made by Howa and sold under the Weatherby brand name. I have been extremely pleased with this very well made rifle and would highly recommend anything produced by Howa.

From what I've been told, the actions on the Howa and Weatherby rifles are the same, but the barrel, trigger and stocks are what makes the two different. The Howa rifles I've seen have been nice looking rifles and shot well for the owners.

I have a 6.5x.284 built on a howa action ,it seems to be as good as any that I have ever shot.

From what I have seen, except for the sub moa vanguard, the barreled actions including triggers are the same on both rifles. The synthetic stocks also looked the same with some vanguards having a fancier wooden stock.

RE: howa rifles?

Howa has produced the actions for Weatherby Vanguards since the early 1970’s. Howa has made several rifles for other companies as well, including Smith and Wesson. Legacy Sports International started importing barreled Howa actions into the US and placing them into Boyd’s stocks and selling them, they started using the Howa name. I am not sure but several reviews have noted differences in the available barrel length and contour between Howa’s and Vanguards, maybe Howa makes both barrels but to slightly different specs. I know Weatherby sets quality control for the rifles Howa makes for them, not sure what control measures Howa imposes on their own namesake. While similar in build I am not sure they are the exact same beast.

I don't think you will be disapointed. I've owned a Howa in a bell & carlson stock for the better part of 20 years. I had trigger work and had the action bedded a year or so after I got it. I own a number of guns including a sako in 7mm 08 (one heck of a gun) the gun that will be the last one that I'll eversell is the howa, if I point it at a critter and pull the trigger what ever I'm shooting at dies. It fits me and the best groups I ever shot with it was 1/4" at 100 yds with believe it or not 180 gr round nose speer bullets.

RE: howa rifles?

Yep, modern Weatherby's have Howa receivers. Which brings up the question, "why do people still pay the price for Weatherbys?"

However, Howa's are good receivers. A few companies make good aftermarket triggers for them now. I've rebarrelled a few Howa's and built some great shooting rifles on those receivers. I personally would not own one since I don't enjoy deliberately sending money to Japan. Call me a prude, but I just don't like Jap car's, firearms, or motorcycles.

Objectively speaking, Remington 700 receivers and rifles are superior to the Howa's.

I find that amusing since many Honda and Toyota vehicles are made in the USA while many vehicles sold by the American companies are made in foreign countries such as Mexico. My Harley is designed in Europe,my Honda atv is made in the USA,my Toyota car is made in Canada, and my new toyota truck will be made in the USA.Yet my neighbours Dodge truck is made in Mexico.

RE: howa rifles?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've heard thatlame rationalizationbefore. Usually from people who own Jap vehicles and bikeswhenperfectly good American vehicles were available.
Bottom line is, no matter where the parts come from, or are assembled, Honda & Toyota are Japanese companies and the money goes to Japan.
You're V Rod enginemay have been designed in Europe andsomeparts of my Wide Glide were made in Japan. But, it's an American company and the money stays here.
I don't care if you own Jap cars and equiment. You shouldn't feel like such a big loser. I'm sure several of your friends don't think of you that way.

If all the money goes to Japan, who pays the american workers working in the American plants.Obviously a big part of that money goes to feed American families.A lot more American families than the mexican made truck sold by an American owned company.

Actually I don't own a v-rod,but obviously some of that money goes to Europe and Japan to pay for the parts and engineering.Or do the Japanese and Europeans work for Harley free of charge?:D

No one can help it that imported rifles are blowing away american in quality and accuracy. Sako, Browning, Howa, Tikka, etc. are some of the best you can get for the money these days. They're sold in america, by americans, for americans. Who cares who makes them, as long as they stay awesome!

Puppypumper,
I made an "analogy". Then you got defensive. Why do you feel you have to sway my opinion? Are you getting paid for it?
Don't bother with me. I'm too old to change and you're an idiot.
