Recoil differnce from .30 06 and .300 WSM
 

I have a tikka T3 lite in 300 wsm with a burris fullfield II and the gun weighs right about 8 pounds.I put a limbsaver recoil pad on it to help with recoil and it helped but its still pretty heavy recoil and ill admit it im flinching and not shooting it well. On top of that its hard to practice much with the cost of ammo soI thinkI want to get a .3006 instead. How much less recoil would an 06 have over the 300. I would get the same tikka t3 as i love the rifle and use the same scope so it would weight the same and use the limbsaver recoil pad.

also is there much differnce in recoil in the .270 and .3006?

Quite a bit in the '06 -vs- 300wsm.I love my 06, its shoots straight, hits hard and recoil fairly easy. I dont think theyres hardly any difference in the 270 and 30-06. Not the ones Ive shot.

The 30-06 will produce less recoil,but if you are recoil sensitive,I would suggest the 308win as it will reduce recoil even more,with only a very slight drop in velocity from the 30-06.

Stubble has it right. Just to compare on paper, for eight lb rifles, the 300 WSM has 23.8 lb recoil, the 30-06 has 20.3 lbs, the 308 has 17.5. This when all shoot a 180 grain bullet The 270 with a 130 grain bullet in a eight lb rifle has 16.5 lb. This will give you and idea of what to expect with rifles of equal weight. If your deer hunting and don't like recoil, I would look at a 7mm-08 or 260. The 270 would be an excellent choice as well. Over the years I have deveoped a really bad shooting shoulder. Anything bigger than the 270 just is not worth the pain to me. Unless you really need the extra power and long range, why put up with the recoil and muzzle blast.

Consider

My two main hunting rifles are 7mm SAUM and a 270 win in original 700 BDL stocks. Recoil is not a factor, but price is when I shoot. I believe in practice practice practice. I purchased a 700 in 223 so i can shoot all I want with very a very similar rifle. I think the 308 would be a better choice thn 3006 for price and recoil, but think about 223.

I went that route for practice shooting as well. I bought a 700 Remington SPS with the 24 inch barrel for just spending the day at the range or the dog town. Good practice and low cost to reload and shoot.

i guess it depends on the use, too. i've got a browning BLR in 270 win that isn't too pleasant to shoot off the bench for extended periods. i get a sore shoulder, no doubt. but in the field, with just the odd shot taken, it's a beauty.i reckon 308/30-06 is the absolute upper limit for a 60-round session, and even then you'd want a reasonably heavy rig. once you pick up a flinch, it is damn hard to get rid of, and your accuracy is gone. a 7mm in the boiler room of most animals will do the job, a 50-cal in the wrong spot will do nothing.i agree with jamesb and ideaman. for practising technique, there is no point shooting cannons. something in 223 or 222 that you can shoot all day with little wear on shooter and barrel makes a lot of sense. and if you really want to hone your "pure shooting" skills, you can't beat .22lr smallbore target competition. trigger control, breathing techniques, sight picture.... all the basics are hammered home without the worry of busting yourself up. but i suspect i've gone way off topic.

the 06 will have less recoil.
