RE: Recoil differnce from .30 06 and .300 WSM
I own a '06 and my buddy hunts with a 300RUM, it kicked like a Bas@$^d until he had a muzzle break installed on it. He actually built the break himself and installed it himself. He is a machinist. He has now made a few of them for people he knows.
His 300RUM know kicks less than my '06. My wife even likes to shoot it, It is a bit louder with the break but hey alot less kick... Just an option. |

I'm going to second the .308Win. Very similar to the .30-06 but much less recoil. You also mentioned that you want something that is cheaper to shoot. The .308Win is very tough to beat in that respect.

I have been readin up on the .308 and some people say it drops off to quick 200-300 yards. Now Im not sure how long most my shots will be but I am antelope hunting with it so maybe 300. I will probably use 165 grain nosler partition for hunting deer, elk, bear, and antelope. How how many yards will that be affective. Aslo is the recoil noticably different in the 3006 and .308?

't worry about the 308 dropping off at 200-300 yard. I and many others used primarily the 308 for 500 Meter steel targets. The 308 is great for deer, antelope, Black bear and elk. Use the 150 grain for deer and Goats and a bit heavier for elk and Black bear. 300 yards is easy range for the 308 if you practice at that range. Same goes for any gun as far as the practice part goes. I shoot a 308 Browning A-Bolt as one of my favorite rifles.
