compact 30-06?
 

I talked to local gunsmith about a elk riflewe went over some figures and he claims he can bring a 30-06 down to 243 recoil with a break and pad so I think i'm going to go for it. i dont want to go after elk undergunned and i think the 06 would fit the bill nicely for elk. Thank you for all you're replies on my original post.Now comes my next question. What gun should i choose. I'm small in stature standing only a measly 4' 7" and i dont want a gun thats as large as i am. I'd like to find a 30-06 in a compact rifle. I really like the look and feel of the remington model 7 CDL but it's not offered in 30-06. Whatrifle makermakes a 30-06 in a smaller compact rifle? Thanks.

Check on a Rem. 700 mountain rifle, my cousin has one and it's awesome to carry around, nice and light, but it will probably be more expensive than a model 7

Think abouta .308. Ballisticsare parallel to the30-06. Vertually any format will be more compact than an equivalent '06 and it has a great reputation for accuracy.

I was fondling a 700 Mountain CDL at the gun shop just this afternoon - sweet stock on that one! My son, who's about 4' 9", was with me, and it seemed to fit him pretty well.

Do bear in mind, though, that these smaller rifles are giving up a pound or so of weight to the standard-sized rifles, so your 'smith will haveto account for that much more recoil.

As for myself, I've got the standard 700 CDL in .30-06. It's got the R3 (Sims?) recoil pad,and I've noticed that the recoil on this rifle is dramatically less than a model 700 that I'd been using that just had a regular pad. I never would have thought that it would have made such a difference.

I hear a bunch of folks up PA way hunt with Rem 7600 Pumps. You might want to check out these out.The30-06 carbinehas a 18 1/2" barrel & an overall length of 39 1/8"....talk about compact!!!

I am seriously considering getting one of these to hunt the wooded mountains here in NW Arkansas. Even in carbine barrel length, a 30-06 would be good to 250-300 Yds which is plenty for around here, and for woods hunting the quick follow up shot offered with the pump would sure come in handy at times.

I handled one of the 7600 Carbines in 30-06 in a local gunshop the other day. I was very impressed with how it balanced, handled and pointed. To top it off, they can be had for as little as $350 (including shipping) on GunsAmerica.com.

If you do go with a 30-06 with a break, do yourself a favor and invest in some hunter's ear plugs. The kind that let you hear normal sound levels but muffle gun shots, or maybe the electronic ones. Even a sigle shot out of one of a rifle witha break, especially with some break styles/patterns, can leave you feeling like you broke your ears. (pun intended)

You are gonna need ear protection for EVERY shot even while hunting unless you wanna be saying "HUH" a helluva lot. I would pass on the brake...use the pad and maybe even a little lead if you have to.

(yes, but those breaks make it several times worse. I've put enough time on the fireing line, behind and next to rifles with them and without to be able to say, it is much worse when they have them)
