compact 30-06?
I talked to local gunsmith about a elk riflewe went over some figures and he claims he can bring a 30-06 down to 243 recoil with a break and pad so I think i'm going to go for it. i dont want to go after elk undergunned and i think the 06 would fit the bill nicely for elk. Thank you for all you're replies on my original post. Now comes my next question. What gun should i choose. I'm small in stature standing only a measly 4' 7" and i dont want a gun thats as large as i am. I'd like to find a 30-06 in a compact rifle. I really like the look and feel of the remington model 7 CDL but it's not offered in 30-06. Whatrifle makermakes a 30-06 in a smaller compact rifle? Thanks.

RE: compact 30-06?
Check on a Rem. 700 mountain rifle, my cousin has one and it's awesome to carry around, nice and light, but it will probably be more expensive than a model 7

RE: compact 30-06?
Think abouta .308. Ballisticsare parallel to the30-06. Vertually any format will be more compact than an equivalent '06 and it has a great reputation for accuracy.

RE: compact 30-06?
check the remmington model 700 youth models, it would be the gun for the job

RE: compact 30-06?
I was fondling a 700 Mountain CDL at the gun shop just this afternoon - sweet stock on that one! My son, who's about 4' 9", was with me, and it seemed to fit him pretty well.
Do bear in mind, though, that these smaller rifles are giving up a pound or so of weight to the standard-sized rifles, so your 'smith will haveto account for that much more recoil. As for myself, I've got the standard 700 CDL in .30-06. It's got the R3 (Sims?) recoil pad,and I've noticed that the recoil on this rifle is dramatically less than a model 700 that I'd been using that just had a regular pad. I never would have thought that it would have made such a difference. |

I hear a bunch of folks up PA way hunt with Rem 7600 Pumps. You might want to check out these out.The30-06 carbinehas a 18 1/2" barrel & an overall length of 39 1/8"....talk about compact!!! I am seriously considering getting one of these to hunt the wooded mountains here in NW Arkansas. Even in carbine barrel length, a 30-06 would be good to 250-300 Yds which is plenty for around here, and for woods hunting the quick follow up shot offered with the pump would sure come in handy at times. I handled one of the 7600 Carbines in 30-06 in a local gunshop the other day. I was very impressed with how it balanced, handled and pointed. To top it off, they can be had for as little as $350 (including shipping) on GunsAmerica.com. Here's a link to the Remignton 7600 page....check it out! http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_7600_specs.asp firstshot ---------------------------- Make your first shot count! |

RE: compact 30-06?
If you do go with a 30-06 with a break, do yourself a favor and invest in some hunter's ear plugs. The kind that let you hear normal sound levels but muffle gun shots, or maybe the electronic ones. Even a sigle shot out of one of a rifle witha break, especially with some break styles/patterns, can leave you feeling like you broke your ears. (pun intended)

RE: compact 30-06?
You are gonna need ear protection for EVERY shot even while hunting unless you wanna be saying "HUH" a helluva lot. I would pass on the brake...use the pad and maybe even a little lead if you have to.

RE: compact 30-06?
huhhh?
(yes, but those breaks make it several times worse. I've put enough time on the fireing line, behind and next to rifles with them and without to be able to say, it is much worse when they have them) |
RE: compact 30-06?
it is illegal to hunt in several african countries with a muzzle break due to the hearing damage inflicted on the guides and bearers. i recommendusing baffle-type earplugs when shooting, irrespective of break or not

RE: compact 30-06?
it sounds like you've got your heart set on an -06, but a light rifle will recoil a fair bit in that calibre. as previously mentioned, perhaps the 308 might be a bit sweeter on the shoulder? and i don't know the requirements for elk in the usa, but would a 7mm-08 do the job? or even a 6.5 swedish? both are very pleasant to shoot. the cross sectional density of the 6.5 projectiles deliver surprising killing power with mild repercussions for the shooter.

Very well said. The 6.5 is a killing machine |
RE: compact 30-06?
thanks for the help guys. I know a break is really harsh on the ears i had to have one installed on my 223remington when i had back surgery. I know a 223rem doesnt kick at all to me to begin with but with just having back surgery they said any jarring at all and i could have been paralyzed so i got it breaked. My dads buddy also uses a 7mm rem with a boss on it so i know how breaks act. I always shoot with a pair of muffs no matter if im on the bench or in the field. I am going to purchase a pair of walker game ear power muffs for my trip. I dont want to have the regular muffs on and the guide telling me what to do and not being able to hear him. I think the muffs would be a wise investment. Thanks for you're help fella's. Keep the idea's coming.

RE: compact 30-06?
I am going to second the vote for the .308 very capable and mild recoil and you don't need to have it breaked.

RE: compact 30-06?
i hunt elk with a rem 700 mnt rifle in 30-06
my Dad used a win mod 70 featherweight in 308 successfully fer many years. Ruger also makes very good lightweight models early |
RE: compact 30-06?
Yep breaks are allowed. The outfitter is the one who brought the idea up to me about getting a 30-06 breaking it to bring out there.

RE: compact 30-06?
I used to own a 7600 pump carbine and a savage 110 both in 30-06. That remington was the hardest kicking gun I have ever shot! And I'm little, not as little as you though. I am 5'3" and at the time weighed about 95 lbs (I weigh 130 now).
How much money do you want to spend? You could get a browning BAR semi auto. That might reduce some of the recoil. I assume the same principle that applies to shotguns would apply to a centerfire. I would also suggest a 270 or 308 over the 30-06 if you are worried about recoil Paul |
RE: compact 30-06?
The Ruger #1 in a light sporter 30 06 is under 39" and still has a 22" barrel. Few things are shorter than a single shot. You could get it ported. (It is also chambered in 270 & 7 mm Mauser.)
