RE: rem742 woodmaster
Two things to say:
1. I always take the guns I used all season to a gunsmith at the end of the season for a check up and cleaning including the 2 previously mentioned 742's. 2. I know where you guys can buy 2 742's cheap! |
RE: rem742 woodmaster
I don't know but, I've had two for years now. One in .243 and the other in 30.06 and both have worked flawlessly. I have never had one jam and I feel I can count on them as well as any other rifle I own. Neither are target rifles, but both will shoot 1" groups off a bench so I have no complaints. Guess I got the only 2 'good' 742's Remington ever made.

RE: rem742 woodmaster
Let me say first of all, thank you to "DOE DUMPER". He is SO correct about these guns. You MUST keep them clean as any rifle and they will shoot great. People that talk bad about these guns never took the time to clean them appropriately. You bought a great gun. I just purchased the all new Remington model 750 autoloader and absolutely love it.

RE: rem742 woodmaster
I have owned several over the years and currently own a 7400 30/06 carbine. They are fine rifles and I always throw it in when heading to deer camp as a back-up or still hunting rig. I have had many a friend end up using it because of their own rifle problems at camp.
Really the key to and gas or semi-auto rifle is keeping it clean and lubed. You do that and you should never have a problem. as far as "jam-masters" that too comes down to cleaning but can also be attributed to magazines. Buy several mags and test them all for function and remember to keep your mags clean as well.A lot of times the lips on the mags can be rough and have burrs on them so I file and buff them to smooth. I still take out an old Remington model 8 in 35 remington for nostalga on doe hunts and maintained correctly it works flawlessly. Not bad for a almost 100 year old auto loader. |
RE: rem742 woodmaster
Rem. I have had a 742 carbine in 30-06 since I was in Jr. Hight School and am now 57. I can't even begin to remember how much game that gun accounted for between my Dad and I. I keep the gun reasonably clean and it never ever failed. As far as I know a Gunsmith has never looked at that gun. Guess I just got a good one. I may even hunt with it this fall just to see if I can stir-up some of those old memories. Best of Luck with yours.

i love my 742 woodmaster. its a 308 win. it has never jamed. great gun and more than accurate. not picky on loads as far as i have found. even took it caribou hunting in -20 degree weather in snow and ice.
