RE: Swiss K31 7.5x55
The best ammo by far accuracy wise is the Swiss GP-11 ammo, its cheap when compared to commercial ammo, but is expensive for surplus ammo. Its worth the price if you just want match grade ammo. My handloads are about as good as GP-11 ammo, its just an unescapable fact that GP-11 ammo and the K-31 rifle were made for eachother.
You can easily reload for the K-31 by necking up 284 win brass to 30 caliber by simply lubing the cases up really well and running them through a 7.5x55 full length die. I do this very easily using RCBS dies, though RCBS dies need a bit of adjusting as they are more suited for reloading for a 1896 or 1911 swiss rifle. Pay careful attention to seating of the bullets as the throats on these rifles are very short, and the land to land dimension is closer to 0.299" than 0.300" as normally seen on 30 caliber rifles. Use .308 winchester reloading data even though the case capacity is very close to that of a 30-06. |

I had a great time shooting my baby today at the range. Man is that rifle accurate. The trigger never gets old. I'm going to refinish the stock this weekend. What a great rifle.

If you are interested in keeping the finish as original as possible:
-Mix Zinsser orange shellac with boiled linseed oil 50:50 -steam the dents out of the stock. -Rub a thin coat of the shellac/linseed oil emulsion on the stock and allow it to dry. |
RE: Swiss K31 7.5x55
Hey Briman,
I decided to stain it to a color of my liking. This rifle is only about 70% so I'm using it as a project gun and a hunting gun. I've since found several websites where you can order up whatever condition you like. Down the road I may end up getting one above the 95% range even if I have to pay a few bucks. This is easily the best out of the box rifle I've ever shot. I can't say one bad thing about it. Tom |

What Briman has told you is definitely spot on. GP-11 is the $h!t for the K-31. Definitely match-grade quality ammo. As mentioned, it is expensive though. The K-31's, in my opinion, is by far the most accurate military surplus rifles that you'll find today. The Swiss never produced any corrosive ammo, unlike most everyone else. Also, you may find a tag under the buttplate with the name, unit and location of the previous Swiss soldier that "owned" the rifle when they were still being issued. Pretty interesting.

RE: Swiss K31 7.5x55
It is amazing that we can get these rifles for the price. Of course, prices are creeping up, but it's still a great deal. Nice rifle, stat. You'll have a lot of fun with it.
I've been thinking of refinishing my stock, but I can't decide whether I want to take this into the woods next season. I'll probably just have to buy another one... |
RE: Swiss K31 7.5x55
ORIGINAL: statjunk Hey Guys, I just bought myself a new rifle, a K31. I shot this rifle at the shooting range and I just fell in love with it. What a nice trigger and the action was smooth and efficient. Does anyone know A) Where can I get a copper brush for it and B) Where is the best place to get cheap ammo for it? Thanks Tom |
