I do agree with your pick of the 7-08, however. Just a real sweet number that quietly goes about taking care of business.

You might be singing a different song about the 6.5x55 SOON. Your right though as far as the 7mm-08 goes its a good one too. His list of choices are all some of my favorites except for the 7 Mag which is a fine caliber but I found them much more than I enjoyed using for Whitetail. The 08's are about as good as it gets. Thats the 260, 7mm-08 and 308. The 6.5 is in the same class as is the 270. I always have to say though that nothing is BETTER than the 270 for deer. The 280 would of course fill the same need. My hard head won't accept the 243 for deer.

I have used the .270, 30-06 and the 7mm mag. The 7mm mag is a little big for whitetails. The .270 and 30-06 are a close match, but I would pick the 30-06.

Rem. 700 action, squared and trued, with a 22 inch premium barrel chambered in 260 rem or7mm-08 topped with a leupold 1.5-5x25mmis about as perfect a whitetail weapon ever made IMHO.

I've used every caliber you mentioned to kill whitetail deer except the 280 Rem. Since your talking 150 yards or less, and hitting power I'd have to say 7mm Rem Mag

Just curious....with a handle like 7600Rem....what caliber are you shooting now? Are you considering changing? If so, why?

As far as your question goes, all of the calibers listed will put a whitetail in the dirt. I like 7mm simply due to a little better BC's & SD than the 30 calibers, at least in bullet weights I consider ideal for whitetails (140-150 Grn). All else being equal (which it's not) this would translate into flatter trajectory and better penetration. With that said, you don't "need" a 7mmMag to drop a whitetail @ 150 Yds, so why put up with the recoil.

In my mind, that leaves the 270 (long action) and 7mm-08 (short action). I prefer the short action and lighter recoil of the 7mm-08, sothat's what Ipicked. Got one in Rem 700 Mtn LSS.

By the way, Rem has a special run out now of 7600's in 7mm-08. They are available from Grice Wholesale http://www.gricewholesale.com/ I contacted Grice (as I'm interested in one myself) and they still have the 7600 7mm-08 special runs in stock.

By the way, here are some ballistics on various 140 Grn bullets, 270 Vs 7mm-08,from the Remington ballistics web site. When it's all said and done, there isn't a spits worth of difference between the two.
