Default .357 mag for deer ?

My dad has a Taurus .357 Mag with i think a 7 1/4" ported barrel and 7 shot. Would it be recomended to shoot deer with it? What is some good ammo to use to take whitetail? We live in North Carolina.

Thanks

I know many use a 357 Mag for deer. My feelings are it's on the light side for Whitetails.Unless you are an extremely experienced handgunner and can make perfect shot placement. My choice would be in the 44 mag, 454 Casull or the 480 Ruger class. The minimum I would recommend would be the 41 mag for Whitetail sized game.I'm sure others will disagree ..........That's just my opinion.

i;m about to use my 357 this year, just bought some federal cast core, winchester partitons, speer gold dot softpoints and rem core lokt, all 165-180 grains all shoot nice in my blackhawk, just keep it close, and your shot true, i would think it;s like using any bow, just keep the angles as easy as possible and you should be ok

out of a hg i like keeping it under 30yd with 50yd being close to max. i like jsp 158gr or heaver or hard cast 158 or heaver. a good rule of hand for range is being able to put each shot in a 6in pie pan the first time each and every time. power wise i like the deer close with a 357 and hogs closer. eave thought i can keep the shots in 6in at 100yd i will not shot that far.

I've shot a couple with a Taurus .44 magnum. Get a heavy bullet, and practice a lot before going out hunting. I would not recommend shooting over 30-40 yards...
