wolf or cabelas bulk
I am going p-dog hunting and I am wondering if I should get the cabelas bulk ammo for a .223 (500 rounds) for about 150 bucks or the wolf ammo (500 rounds) for about 70 bucks. I dont care if it isnt exactly perfect just some thing for p-dogs, But I also dont want crap.

RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
I’m a very picky person, I love Cabela’s, and could spend copious amounts of cash at the store, but I tend to favor Federal Cartridge Co for all of my ammo needs. I’ve never tried anything else. I think I would crumble into little bits if I did.

RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
I would say it depends on what shoots better from your gun. I am like the above. I find an ammo my rifles like and I stick with it. I have never had good luck with bulk ammo any way.
I don't care what I am shooting at, when I pull the trigger I want to hit where I am aiming. And I want the correct bullet for the job. P dogs and woodchucks get ballistic tips with me. Unless I am trying to crack one with a muzzle loader or slug gun;). Paul |
RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
I value my guns too much to shoot junk or cheap ammo in them. If I were you I would get remanufactured Black Hills ammo .22350 gr VMAX for $18 for 50. This ammo is 1st class accurate and will shoot flies at 100 yds in my guns.

RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
i use cabela's bulk 223 in mymini14 no problems at all. it's way more accurate than the surplus ball i got. but ain't no way i could use that outfit fer PD's so i dunno if it's any good in a bolt/rifle.. that wolf bulkis steel cased it might be fine; but i wouldn't put in one a my good bolt/rifles. the blk hills $18 fer 50 sounds like a good deal ta me; i been readin hardcore's posts fer awhile from another forum. if he say's it shoots flies i'd try it.
early PS i got some wolf gold label ordered fer my -06 but it'll be a couple years b4 i try it. its supposed ta be good. i'll see. |
RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
I like the 45 gr winchester varmint load. In my 223 it shoots consistantly into 1/2-3/4" at 100 yds and shooting silhouettes at 300 yds went 18 for 18. Run you about $12 for 40 at Walmart and you get to keep the brass for reloading.

RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
the wolf is more so made for AR's and the like instead of good bolt guns. and i wouldnt try anything but either v-max, sp, or hp rounds for any animal. some of the best factory ive tried was black hills 55 gr. sp. which is what i still shoot basicly. i shoot it when i want to shoot factory and i reload almost the identicle load for everything else. ive not had much luck with finding good ultramax stuff. and as far as the win 45 gr. goes its not bad stuff. i shot some and got a bout 1.5" groups at 100 yrds. if you go with cabelas stuff id get their 55 gr sp. its the cheaper of the "good" stuff. the vmax work well but they are more expensive and the sp's do just as well same with the hp's imo. so all in all if i was going to get factory stuff id go for black hills first then the cabelas bulk. if you are near one it would be betterprobably to just go get some seeings that freight is so much and then they cant give you the back order crap.

RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
I would also like to point out that my cabelas order of Wolf 55gr FMJ ammo cost me about $4 more than if i would have went to Academy and bought it there. Monarch Ammo is going for 2.89 a 20rd box so do the math. After you figure in shipping and time waiting for the ammo it may be cheaper to go get it local. If you can find it. (i bought the last 10boxes of monarch .223 from academy today.)

[blockquote]quote: ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner check out ultramax 55 gr sp's, shoots in the .2's in my AR [/blockquote] Shooting in the .2's......With a .223.........With Factory ammo..... ..............With an Ar-15? I've toyed with some seriously accurate rifles and cant help but view this with skeptisim. agreed |

RE: wolf or cabelas bulk
Make sure the Wolf isn't lacquer coated. When the AR chamber is really hot, it causes the lacquer to melt off of the case, and when the chamber cools, the lacquer is permanetly stuck on. This has destroyed countless AR chambers. I think Wolf has since done away with the lacquer, but if you're buying any online or over a catalogue, make sure to ask first.
