shot out barrel
 

looking to find out if any one has ever shot a barrel out or if it is possible. My freinds 300 Wetherby would not shoot last fall i had a gun shop look at it and found the stock was broke (aftermarket Bell&carlson) they (b&c) sent a new stock it was fitted by a gun smith but it will not shoot any better than a 6" group at 75 yards , It has a Leupold 3.5-10 VIII on it all is tight on the mounts it is going to the gun smith this week just wondererd if anyone had a idea it has been shot alot 300 to 400 times

Sounds more like a fouled barrel, then a shot out barrel.

My father finally shot out his Ruger #1 barrel.But that was after 30years of shooting one gun for all his hunting. A competition grade shooter can shoot out a barrel faster than most. But their shot out barrel will still produce groups most hunters can't shoot anyway. If you have shot your rifle thousands of rounds and it won't stay under 2"groups with any load then you probally have shot your barrel out.

You could burn out a 300wby in 400rounds if you made a habit of shooting long shot strings without letting the barrel cool.However with such large groups happening instantly,my first suspect would be the scope.It is possible that the barrel has an extreme amount of copper fouling,but the results should have been gradual,not so suddenly.

I'm not an expert by any means, but could it be possible that the new stock is causing the problem? Maybe it is putting pressure on the barrel, or torque on some other part? Just a thought.

the stock was fitted (you can run a dollar bill up to the mounting screw)and this started with me thinking about the gun being fouled so i cleaned it, and the gun shop cleaned it so i do not think it is copper fouled and I've shot the gun (not that i'm a great shot) it will not shoot. time for a new gun?????

Well, I have shot out a barrel in a 300RUM twice. Factory barrel took around 1000 shots. But it wasn't as dramatic as your issue. When you burn out a barrel, it will be gradual. One barrel I had was a Krieger match barrel, and it shot around .5MOA and then got little worse, and then I had flyers. After borescoping, the throat had heat cracks. So it wasn't burned out really but fouled bad after 4 or 5 shots and the flyers would come. The factory barrel that burned out went from 1.1MOA to 1.5MOA around 800 rounds and then went to 2MOA before I rebarreled it. I kept careful records of the bore by measuring the freebore every 100 rounds or so. It was lengthening.

6" groups sounds like a bedding issue or lug contact, something severe.

Make sure the action screws are 40inch-lbs front and around 20 back. The smith may have fited it but did he glass bed it? Two different things. If its movin in the stock, it will never shoot well.

People won't believe it, including myself, but when people grab onto a 300win or weatherby or RUM, it takes special practice to shoot them. I got a win mag when I was young and shot 3-4" groups at 100 yards. I thought the gun was junk. I sold it. Shooting it I would cut my knuckle and forefinger from the recoil. I was shooting it like it was my trusty 270win. The guy who bought it was extremely happy, it was a genuine 1MOA gun. He showed me his groups and I was amazed. Since then and dozens of rifles later, I know that it was me back then. I didn't know how to handle that gun. I since then have shot all kinds of >30 ft-lb recoil guns and seem to do much better. Before shooting a 338RUM or simular, I need to be in the mood. Calm and light on the coffee that morning.

Yes....I'm on this band wagon as well.....I'll bet the stock needs to be glass bedded and free floated.....something isn't what it's supposed to be in the bedding.

Is this a Bell and Carlson medalist or just one of their non pillar bedded stocks?
