Default Best Deer Rifle for a 55 yr old man

Gentlemen, The reason for this post is the following. I've been trying to get my old man into hunting and i'm trying to locate a decent deer gun for him. He's a working guy who although once was very atheletic, he's not in the best physical condition now & I don't think he can shoulder some of the deer calibers out there. Several people have suggested the 7mm-08, however I wanted to hear what you guys think. Thanks in advance & God Bless.

7mm-08 with 140 grain bullets..Flies almost as flat as a 270 and hits like a 165 grain 308 win and recoils like a 243. Doesn't get much better then that

I could live the rest of my life deer hunting with a Rem. 7-08 in a light weight rifle. I also agree on useing 140 grain bullets... I would use a "premium" bullet for bigger deer or black bear though...

7mm-08 or maybe a 243. Both are excellent deer cartridges with light recoil. The 7mm-08 with a 140 gr. bullet delivers approx. 2569 ft.lbs. of energy, while the 243 with a 100 gr. bullet delivers approx. 1950 ft.lbs.

What they said. 7mm.08 tough to beat for somebody recoil shy or of light stature also. Great round for women too. We are going to New Foundland next year and my wife will be moose and caribou hunting with the round in a Browning Micro hunter.

Another one to consider is a 25-06. I have a Tikka Lite SS in that caliber that shoots honest to goodness 1/2 groups. Rem. Core Lokt Ultras 115 gr are a good choice... IMO.

Ammo is a little bit of a challenge and I don't know anyone that is making a factory gun chambered for it however the 7 x 57 mauser shooting 140's or 150s is a sweet gun, the 7 08 is a pleasure to shoot also the last 2 deer I harvested have been with a sako 7 08 in a mcmillian stock.

The 7mm-08 would be fine. A .270 Win. with 130 gr. bullets would be good medicine too.

You should follow all of this advice. 7mm-08 is going to be very hard to beat.

260, 7mm-08, 308 will all fill the bill, from an ammo standpoint the 308 will offer the most factory loads and probably the most versatility. Then again I would not hestitate to hunt with any of them.
