Petrey,

With a .223 'yotes are the biggest animals you should take.
With a 22-250 you'll need to stop at coyote-sized animal. (Which it will put down with authority)
With a 243 you'll need to stop at deer-sized animals.
With a 270...I'll let someone else comment, I have no experience with this round and deer are the biggest thing I hunt.

All will take their intended game well past 200yards. Which is probably the farthest most people should hunt at, especially someone who's new to rifle shooting. The 22-250 will be the flattest shooting. The .243 and .270 will move left or right in the wind a little less, but not shoot as quite as flat. I think all would be a fine "introduction caliber".

If you find a good deal on any of these calibers (.223 included) get it, cause any will fill you bill.

There are a number of varmit calibers that would do. Determine the yardage you're likely to be shooting at consistently, then look up in charts that show amount of drop, ft/lbs, etc. at those yardages.

As far as accurate, quality rifle out of the box, I'd recommend Tikka rifles hands down to anyone. For those who own a Tikka, 2 or more, I think you'll get the same reaction. 1 MOA at 1 hunderd yard tested at the factory.

I've shot within that at 200 yards, with a Nikon Monarch mounted and Premium ammo. You won't go wrong with a Tikka, a good scope and quality ammo for any type of hunting including varmits.

You would definately not go wrong with a 270. It will dispatch yotes, deer, elk, and moose equally well. For yotes and gophers you can fire 90 or 100 grain loads. For the bigger critters you have 130 140 150 and 160 grainers. Recoil is minimal too. An added bonus is that it shoots real flat.

for animals coyote size and smallerI would recommend a 223 in a heavy varminter barrel. Here's why you can buy ammo cheap, its accurate, and it doesn't heat too bad. Those are all excellent attributes of a varmint rifle. Now you can take the 223 to a prairie dog town and have a absolute ball!

This summer I am going to be getting a rifle of some sort...I will be using this rifle as mainly a coyote gun and a gun to just go out and have fun shooting period...I have been leaning towards getting a H&R Handi-rifle 22-250...But I just handled the new accutrigger from Savage in 22-250 and it was pretty sweet... I am just wondering what calibers you guys are using out there to get coyotes and the best value as to price...
Have a Remington M700 BDL in .22-250. It's dead on balls accurate.

doesn't the weight of bullet you use depend on the amount of twist you have in your barrel??? so if I got a 270 woudl i be able to shoot the low range like the 90 grain as accurately as the big bullets such as the 160 gr??

When bullets get too heavy for the twist you loose accuracy because they start to tumble through the air...when they get too light its because they are spinning so fast they fly apart. In 22-250 the max is usually a 55gr bullet, .223s shoot the same bullet but have a faster twist but I don't know what the limits are...I would guess you're good up to at least 60 grains. As to the 270 minimum...if you can find the weight in a factory load its probably fine...in fact that's usually the case on both ends of the spectrum. It's us handloaders that really have to start worrying about twist rates/bullet combinations.
