Good Starting Gun?
 

I'm new to guns but quite interested and was wondering what you guys would recommend that is stronger than a .22 (maybe .30 or .40 cal), can shoot 300 yards+, and has ammo that isn't too costly? I appreciate any advice you can give.

If you mean rifles, its quite a jump from a .22 to a 30 or 40 caliber. If you mean pistols, the 38 special and 9MM are pretty mild and fairly cheap to shoot. If you want to hunt varmit and maybe deer, the 243 or 25-06 would fit the bill for most. Give us a little more info on what you want to do with the gun.

yeah sorry. I want a rifle and am not interested in hunting quite yet. mainly just shooting at the range. What can I get that is budget with the ammo? The rifle I'm not as concerned about because it's a one time buy.

I would suggest a good 223. Ammo is really cheap and its fun to shoot with no recoil to worry about. I use one for varmit hunting out to 300 yards or so. Cheap ammo is available everywhere. Its a centerfire not a rimfire so you will get the feel of a real rifle. Savage and Remington are brands that I have owned in that caliber as well as the Ruger. Hope this helps.

As far as something with cheap ammo that is fun to take to the range, I'd recommend a .223, also. I have a Browning, and it is a fun gun to take to the range or to take out after varmints.

Since you are talking mainly about target shooting versus hunting,
(bad shots will only hurt your ego, not animals, especially on long range shooting!)
I'd have to agree, the .223 is going to be your cheapest, and best upgrade to the .22 Rimfires!

Seems everyone told you the cartridge but no one mentioned a rifle. I have to agree with the majority here. For the range and cost of ammo, its hard to beat the .223. As for the rifle, IMO, I would go with a Savage 11F or 16F. They are reliable, accurate and moderately priced. For the .223 I would get myself a decent scope in 4 -12X.

It depends on the load you're using. I'd suggest going to the website of the company that manufactured the ammo and looking at their ballistic charts.
