I thought from earlier comments you didnt want a revolver. If thats not the case then I second what Bigbulls just stated. Those calibers/guns are all excellent choices.

THERE IS NO ALL PURPOSE WEAPON

For the trail, I would select a .45 Long Colt in a Sheriff Model...short barrel, easy carry, safe, single action, maybe hot loads with H/P. Mine is a Ruger.
For town, in a purse, the Tarus Double Action snub nose in .22 mag with hollowpoints is a good choice.
My daughter shoots a .22 H/P which explodes a plastic gallon water jug...my .45/70 appears to have no effect but to go right through it.
Could be very painful if you are a water jug facing my daughter with .22 H/P.

I'm going to second the nomination of the Ruger SP101 .357 magnum. I think it fits your stated needs pretty well, for anything except an enraged, charging Grizzly. Revolvers are, generally, a little less complicated and a little easier to learn to use than semi-autos. And, the SP101 is a nice, compact, reasonably lightweight, reliable, easy to use and care for firearm. A S&W 66 or 686 would be nice also, but the SP101 is a bit smaller and more easily concealed, since it's a 5 shot, rather than a 6.

P.S.: I do come with a few guns included. It's a package deal.
