RE: concealed carry
i have mine. I will say in texas if you are travelin with you family, over 2 countys away from your home, or are carrying $200+ cash on your persons you dont need a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Well thats what our instructor told us NEway. PLUS now you can carry a weapon in your vehicle LEGALLY. kinda eliminates the permit for most of the place i go i am with family or have $200 on me, heck i carry atleast $100 in my car at all times "just in case" money.

RE: concealed carry
Shelby county, Alabama. Though Alabama does not issue to nonresidents.
If you want to get an out of state permit look at Florida. They issue to nonresidents and are reciprocated in more states than any other issueing state. It's valid for 5 years also. God forbid if you have to use a gun to defend your or your famalies life and you actually hit what you are aiming at. Wouldn't that be a shame. I would think that you should score 50/50. Isn't the whole purpose of taking the training course to learn how to hit the attacker that you are aiming at and not innocent bystanders? If common sense is so common why is it that more people don't have it? :( [:@] |
RE: concealed carry
I've taken the course and paid my $144 to the state. Can anyone think of any other rights we have as law abiding citizens of the USA you have to pay be licened and pay $144 to use, or else be charged with a crime? Thereare very low chances where I live of ever having to even draw my gun in public or in a home invasion, but I felt the need to exercise my RKBA.
"The powers of the sword, say the minority of Pennsylvania, is in the hands of Congress. My friends and countrymen, it is not so, for the powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty. The militia of these free commonwealths, entitled and accustomed to their arms, when compared with any possible army, must be tremendous and irresistible. Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom? Congress have no right to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American.... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or the state governments, but where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people." - Pennsylvania Gazette, February 20, 1788 "No free government was ever founded or ever preserved its liberty, without uniting the characters of the citizen and soldier in those destined for the defense of the state.... Such are a well regulated militia, composed of the freeholders, citizen and husbandman, who take up arms to preserve their property, as individuals, and their rights as freemen." - State Gazette (Charleston), September 8, 1788 Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to his nephew, Peter Carr Paris, Aug 19, 1785 A strong body makes a strong mind. As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body, and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks. |

Law in Texas for many years was the "traveler defense", and this is what he is apparently talking about with the "2 countys/200 dollars/family" stuff. Dead wrong! The statue merely stated being a traveler was a defense to prosecution. There was no legal definition of who or what a traveler was, and not much in the way of statewide precedents or guides. You could, and in most jurisdictions WOULD be arrested and charged with illegally carrying a handgun. Current law was passed with the legislative intent of clairifying traveling. Basicly says you are presumed to be a traveler if: 1. You are in a private motor vehicle 2. Not otherwise engaged in criminla activity, other than a class C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating traffic. 3. Not otherwise prohibited by law from posessing a firearm. 4. Not a member of a criminal street gang, as defined in 71.01 5. Not carrying a handgun in plain view. Now the bad news. The DAs of several counties, such as Harris and Travis, have instructed the law enforcement agencies in those countiesto continue to arrest people carrying a handgun in their vehicles in this manner. I'm not looking to be the one who ends up in court as a test case to determine what the law actually says. I wouldn't advise anyone else to, either. cost me $50 and 8hours on a saturday. RE: concealed carry
I've beencarrying for a couple of years now.At last check, I'm legal in 24 states with my VA and PA permits.
Some states have stricter criteria than others when it comes to issuing permits. In Virginia I was required to prove that I had handgun safety training (my hunter ed certificate satisfied that), submit my paperwork with $50, and wait about 45 days to receive the permit in the mail. For my nonresident PA permit I sent the paperwork with $20 to the Centre County Sheriff's Office and received my permit in about two weeks. Packing.org is a tremendous resource for concealed carriers, and I recommend it and the 'Gun Talk' section to get as much information as you can regarding carry and the laws concerning it. |
RE: concealed carry
Just like Aught Six, I have a CWP here in Virginia. I can carry my small Taurus 85, .38spl snubby if I want to.
But, 99.9999% of the time, I don't carry concealed. I got my permit in event I should have to and because the 2nd Amendment says I can carry. I used my USCG DD-214 and firearms qualification (M-16 rifle qual, 1911 .45ACP pistol qual) and easily got a CWP. ![]() |

RE: concealed carry
Isn't allowed in my state. Doesn't mean I don't carry a pistol if I have to travel or work in a bad neighborhood.

RE: concealed carry
I got my permit to carry in Alaska, and shortly thereafter our governor decided we didn't need them anymore. I wish I would have known he was going to do that before I spent the $200. Alaska is like Vermont; anyone legally allowed to own a handgun may carry it. Even non-residents can carry concealed in Alaska.
|
RE: concealed carry
I would love to live in Alaska, I would love to visit Vermont! But i'm pretty happy here in Alabama, where I've had a ccw since 1976. I just went to the Tallapoosa Co. sherriffs office and paid my $10 and was good to go for 1 year. Now it's gone up to $15 and I complained about having to pay to exercise my constitutional rights! The sheriff ask me would I rather just move to D.C and I said ( hell no)!

RE: concealed carry

RE: concealed carry
I have had my permit for 10 years and do carry a weapon everyday. I originally got my permit to just carry in my truck, but with all the crazy stuff happening in the world, I now carry on me daily.
By the way, my wife is an english teacher and was looking over my shoulder when I read this post. She cringed. She wanted me to let squirrelkilla know the "leagally" should be "legally". |

RE: concealed carry
I just got my Utah permit! I'm a Missouri resident though! Carry my XD sub-compact .40 in a don hume holster!

RE: concealed carry
My state, IL, does not issue any carry permits, and does not honor those from any other state. IL is one of the last 4 to 6 holdouts depending on how you do your math. There are two states that technically issue permits, but only a small handfull of influential and connected people ever get them.
Some days I think our Governor and Chicago's Mayor would keep the police from having guns if they thought they would stay in power without them. Anyway,IL residentsalso need to apply for, and be granted, a Firearm Owners Identification Card just to handle a gun in a store or buy ammo. Kinda overkill if you asked me, but such is the state of things right now. Hopefully one day, all the states will see the light that having good guys carrying guns is the best thing we could have to defend the general population. I'm actually hoping for nationwide reciprocity to keep travelling with a CW simple, but I won't hold my breath. |
RE: concealed carry
I have had my PA permit for several years but rarely carry. When I first got it, all those years ago, I carried all the time. Maybe its time I get mea new pistol and start packing again?

RE: concealed carry
ORIGINAL: Windwalker7 I have had my PA permit for several years but rarely carry. When I first got it, all those years ago, I carried all the time. Maybe its time I get mea new pistol and start packing again? I have had the same problem about finding a "confortable" gun to carry. I have tried all sizes of Glocks, Sig P228, Walther PPK,and a Colt 1911 but all were too large and heavy for me to conceal confortably. About a year ago, I got into S&W "wheel guns" and found that my "perfect" easily concealable carry gun is a S&W M38. It is the "bodyguard" style and an airweight. I can carry it all day and actually forget that I have it on me. Wheel guns aren't for everyone, but it might be something to consider. |
RE: concealed carry
When I first got my permit, almost 20 years ago, I carried a S&W Model 19. Then I got a Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag. and carried that. LOL! Let's face it.......I was an idiot LOL! That was back when having the permit was new. Then I carried a cheap little Jennings .22 auto. After a while I just quit carrying. I even sold the Redhawk and Mod. 19.
Today all I got is a Ruger Security-six that my dad gave me. I've been looking at the 9mm's and 45's. I don't know. Maybe I'll just carry the Ruger Security-Six and save the money. |
RE: concealed carry
I have a relatedquestion to pose here. Do you who carry ona daily basis wear "special" clothing to conceal your weapon? The main reason that I carry my Smith airweight is that it fits comfortably in my boot top. I prefer to carry in my waistband forquicker, easieraccess, but without wearing something like a jacket, I can't completely conceal my gun. Any suggestions?
|
RE: concealed carry
Retreiverman, In the winter time I just wear a jacket and carry it in a paddle holster on my belt.
In the summer I carry it inside the waist of my pants in the small of my back and leave my shirt untucked. However, I am 6'2" and weight 275 pounds so it's not all that hard co hide a gun on my body if I just wear loose clothing. I don't like that "tactical" cloting made specifically for hiding guns, magazines, etc... To me it just screams that you are packing. |

I've carried almost everywhere possible in the last ten years. I've been to symposiums with several hundred people, I've spoken to groups of 100 people or more from a stage, and I've had dealings with LEOs several times, and have NEVER been made. |
