Bigcountry HUSH I bought the 300 RUM so I could burn 100 grs of Retumbo and the recoil is not that harsh. If my shoulder should get sore I have a 220 Swift and others. This rifle has found a home even though it is a bit heavy at 9 lbs. Oh by the way I always wanted a 300 Weatherby but the price of the gun got in the way I just couldn't afford it. I would lust after the 300 Laser Mark.

oldelkhunter, absolutely, you can get an accurate 300wthby. Just don't like the freebore thing. It is a trick to get that high velocity and if the tolerances are not near perfect, that freebore could hurt accuracy. Thats the reason alot of people worry about throat erosion. They like to get their bullets right up the rifling. But if you don't like belt and would rather your cartridge's shoulder do the job of seating it, then the RUM might be for you. I like to think of it like this. You can get gobs of Horsepower out of a these new ricebangers with all kinds of hightech tricks and turbo's and nitrous, or you can get it with raw bruit strength. Weatherby's concept of freeboring was well ahead of its time when it came out. But you might the type of guy that likes a 454 chevy motor with raw bruit strength than a high tech 4 banger. Then the RUM would be your choice. I would either and not think twice. So give me your theory on why the Weatherby rounds are the most accurate? Scientificly, the concept of freeboring would degate that. Wouldn't you think. But the WSM on the other hand, thats a different story.

Big Country...I think the Belt has no affect on accuracy one way or the other provided you don't size full size the case. Your right the freebore is what hurts the accuracy on weatherby magnums. Although I don't know if my 300 is a dog since it shoots factory loads almost to 1/2 of their accuracy guarantee on a real good day. If you customize the rifle and make it a short throat you will have one accurate rifle. I am almost tempted to have one made up after talking to these 2 gunsmiths, but I already have a closetfull of Big Mag,Little Mags and Standard calibers. Accuracy wise if you accept the less powder=less recoil and size the cases correctly and they both have the same length throat then the Weatherby is going to be more accurate you know ala 308 win theory.

Ok, I will accept that theory to some extent if your recoil senitive. But both these calibers are meant for the less recoil sensitive crowd. Ok, I know you wouldn't want me to keep shooting this 300RUM, so go ahead and give me that 1/2&quot; shooter to keep me from making the big mistake of shooting the RUM. I guess I can take it in the woods<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I wish it were a 1/2 shooter it's only maybe 3/4 on a good day but it has that lousy Weatherby tupperware stock on it. Yes they are both for the recoil intolerant types and not the one box of ammo a year hunter that unfortunately is very prevalent these days.

No, gentleman, they are not for the recoil sensitive. I had a tack driver of a .300 Wby that I had to sell because it just pounded on my bad shoulder a bit too much. I nearly cried when it sold. However, I used the newly available funds to fly to Kentucky and pick up another English Setter pup from champion breeding. When she pointed a covey of chukar on her first wild-bird hunt a couple of weeks ago and I managed to knock down a double for her, the pain (both types) went away.

I spoke to Remington and all RUM's have freebores. Good luck.

I have a sako 75 in the 300 ultra mag. I had a KDF break installed before shooting and topped it off with a swarovski 6x24x50 pro hunter scope. The recoil is well below anything I expected, not much more than my 30.06. I am shooting Remington premier 180 gr and placing 3/8&quot; groups at 100 yards. I'll take the 18% more power over the 300 win mag anytime.

Yep, they have some freebore. About .1&quot;. Weatherbys have almost 1&quot;. Can't really compare them. But properly reamed by someone who knows what they are doing, you should be able to load the 300RUM and be able to touch the rifling and still be under the 3.6&quot; COL. I have also talked to people at remington. I bet they didn't give out any dimensions or freebore spec. You know why? Cause they are all over the map. I was on a quest a year or so ago. I took my Stoney Point AOL Gauge and a few different bullets around the gun stores. I measured from 3.68&quot; to 3.85&quot;. This is the measurement you would have to load a cartridge to reach the lands. So I finally got past the idiots on the customer service line and got someone who knows what they are talking about in the custom shop, I think Ron Angle, and he kinda admitted that the freebore, if you can call it that, is a combination of machining slop and to fit any ammo that other manufactures come out with.
