Browning Micro Hunter
 

Well after much indecision, I finally decided that I am going to purchase a Browning A-Bolt II Micro Hunter. It feels great for my body size when I shoulder it and I like the way the bolt feels when I work the action. Now I can't decide between the 308, 7mm-08 or the 270. I know it is just a matter of personnel preference, however, was wondering what you guys think. The rifle will be used almost exclusively for hunting whitetail, other than range shooting.

You will be happy with any of those 3 calibers. All will do what you want, all three are very very good for whitetails.

My latest purchase was a .308 . I am extremely please with this caliber. I bought it because I did not have a .308 in my gun safe. I took several deer with it this past year.

In the past I have own a .270. Loved it! Never an issue.

My brother owns a 7mm-08 and loves it as well. He has taken a lot of whitetail with it.

So it is going to be a difficult chopice for you that comes down to personal factors.

Lots of previous posts in the forum dealing with this kind of decision.

Handloading?
Factory ammo only?
Any benchshooting other than just sighting the rifle in?

Browning's expectations on accuracy is about 1 1/2 - 2 MOA. I was getting this with my Microhunter in 7-08 but wasn't satisfied. I also liked the way the rifle fit me and how it handled. I dropped it off at my local gunsmith and for a mere $25 he bedded the action. My initial session after the bedding was much better - less than 1 1/2". After a bit of tinkering with different powders/bullets/primers I finally got a load that regularly produces less than 1 MOA. This 'little gun' has found a place in my safe and will be around for a while. And for whitetails, its hard to beat the little 7-08.

I regret trading an A-Bolt in 7-08.
It would shoot sub MOA groups with many different factory ammo.
I sold it to a guy who had the same and had traded it off and wished he had never gotten rid of it, now I am there!

All three are great calibers. If you are planning on punching much paper, you might lean for the .308 because you can get cheap military surplus ammo.

The MicroHunter just screams either 308 or 7mm-08 to me. Small, comapct rifles should have small compact cartridges. I like 7mm bullets for whitetails somy personal pick would be a 7mm-08.

I still have this nostalgic thing with Jack O'conner and the 270. I had one in a semi automatic. Hated the gun, loved the caliber. Wish I has another one. You should have one! EJ

Where did you get this info from? Is it just your opinion or did you call Browning?

I agree that gun screems 7mm-08 or 308 or some type of short action caliber. I was looking at that gun when I bought a A-bolt Hunter in 243Wssm. It is the exact same gun as the Micro but with a 23" barrel, it has the shorter stock I just wanted one of the Wssm's. If you buy any of the Wssm's they have the same stock as your Micro just a little bit longer barrel.

For just whitetails it would be a coin flip..lol. I used the 270 for years and loved it and bought a 7-08 just to try and now I dont use anything else. I havent shot a 308 much.
