Buying a 700 XCR, what caliber?
 

Well, after much research on all weather rifles, I have decided on a Remington 700 XCR. The question now is what caliber? It will see the most action (98% of the time)on Adirondack whitetails, and some black bear. I will more than likely take it on a caribou hunt or two, and would some day like to go west for elk. What caliber would you all suggest?

I have one in .270 and I hunt mule deer and elk. I would think this would be a good choice for want you want to hunt. My second choice would be a 30.06. Congrats on the new purchase. You won't be disappointed.

When you mention elk,I like at least a .284" bullet.The 7mmremmag would be my choice.

If it comes in 308 win, a splendid cartridge.

However if you already own a deer rifle you like then maybetake look at 300 wm.

7 MM MAG. or .300 MAG. WSM or Win. would be a good choice , and at the high end .338 MAG. would be good too.

Is this the last rifle you plan to buy? If not, don't consider an elk rifle until you're ready to hunt them. Pick your caliber based upon the animals you currently hunt. The .270 win. is a great round for deer, bear, and caribou.

30-06 or 7remmag. either will do all you mention, with ease.both rounds are VERY popular, and have been taking game worldwide for many years.

I used to look at and own alotof the new cartridges out there but the 30-06 can do just about anything and has proven itself in battle and in hunting. You can find ammo for it just about anywhere if in a pinch. Dont get me wrong though, I have a .308 that does just fine but not with bigger bullets like 200 or bigger. The 30-06 has factoryloads from 110 up to the 220 if its still made. There is also the Remington 55 grain .22 saboted accelerator round at about 4000 feet per second. There is more of a variety of .308 bullets than any other cartridge for reloading which is appealing also.Its justa greatall aroung cartridge.

Judging from some of the other responses, lemme turn it up a notch and suggest a 416 Rem or 460 Weatherby...them ol deer can be a bit nasty :D
