870 cantilever rifled barrel
i like the idea of a .50 cal deer shooter. plus its a what the heck kinda of move. any body out there use the 870 rifled slug barrel with cantilever scope? worth the money and is it possible to get the same accuracy out the the rifled sight rifled barrel?

RE: 870 cantilever rifled barrel
I have a Hastings. Accuracy is better than rifled slugs for sure but really don't know what it can do because my 870 has got to have at LEAST a 10# trigger. (Combine that with the conscious effert to fight the flinch...and it's just no good) If 100-120yards is going to be you're max range (And I think it should) there's no "need" for a scope. I actually wish I had bought the rifle sights now. If you do get the cantilever I would advice a nice small scope with no more than 4x. Just my 2 cents.

RE: 870 cantilever rifled barrel
I got the express version of the 870 SPS Super Slug. I haven't shot it enought to really tell how good it shoots. My dad has the 1187 version and took a deer out running at 150 yds. The 1187s come with 21" barrels. The rifled barrel with rifle sights is either 20 or 21" so I assume you'll get similar accuracy.
I shoot the hornady's and with the longer barrel, I could take deer out to 200 yds.
If you wanted both a scope and rifle sights for any situation, try getting the rifled barrel w/ rifle sights and a B-Square scope mount for the receiver. I like the cantilever mount because the scope is fixed to the barrel, not the receiver. So if the barrel moves just slightly for any reason such as when you're putting back on after cleaning, the scope is in the same position, but the B-Square mount doesn't account for that.

I don't know where you were looking at for that price for cabelas.
Go tohttp://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0005760212137a&type=product&cm Cat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3Aha sJS=+&QueryText=remington+870+super+slug&_ DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.22&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mod e+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=remington+870+super+s lug&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jsp
They have the 23" Super Slug barrel and in the description they say with the scope just like the one at walmart for $10+ cheaper before shipping.

RE: 870 cantilever rifled barrel
Alright, my .02 worth. I am limited to slug hunting deer here in IL and have done it for the last 30+ years. I have some experience.
Dick's Sporting Goods sells the 870 synthetic with rifled canti scope barrel at $300. I think that's a very fair deal. Top it off w/ a 2X or 4X scope and you're in business.
If you have an 870 abd want to turn it into a slug gun the Remington barrel/scope combos are fantastic. I just put the Remington barrel combo on a Mossberg 500 and the results were fantastic, pretty much right out of the package. It required VERY LITTLE "tuning". Although I paid $169.99 for it (those prices from the above replies seem VERY HIGH.
My buddy put a Remington barrel/scope combo on his 870 and it was dead on at 75yards. I guess the part on the package that sez factory laser bore sighted is very true and then some as most of the time the bore sighting pretty much just gets you "on the paper". He paid $179.99 for his.
Now for scopes. The Remington barrel combos come with a 3X-9X and will not be on my Mossberg for next season - that is a guarantee. The eye relief is not what I would call "condusive to good marksmanship". I will put either a straight 2X or 4X on it. I don't see much sense in anything but a low magnification straight power scope on a slug gun. A 4X will do just fine way out there.
Pump gun w/ slugs? Don't forget the nice aftermarket recoil pad.

Actually, it comes with a 2-7X.
Mine has a 1.5-5X, I like the versatility in the magnification. I might hunt open areas where I could use 5X or it could be thick or might jump adeer and take running shots and need 1.5X.

I have a 870 with the cantilever scope and a burris 1x-4x. It shoots goodout to about 125 yards using lightfield slugs 2 3/4. I would get the rifled cantilever barrel rather then the open sighted one if you shoot over a 100 yards. IMO

The ballistics of Lightfields can't compare to most of the modern higher end sabots past 100yds.

I shoot the Hornady SSTs. They are rated out to 150 yds. and could shoot as far as 200 yds. under perfect conditions. They say the SSTs are 2 3/4" but actually are 2 7/8" for anyone that would shoot these out of a gun that accepts only 2 3/4".
