Remington 1100 Shell Size
My friend has a Remington 1100 12-gauge, and he would like to know if he could shoot3" lead shot out of a 2 3/4", 3" barrel.The barrel says steel shot, does that mean he has to get another barrel?

As long as it says 3" on the barrel! If it says 2-3/4" do not shoot 3". Yes he can shoot lead shot! Which model does he have? The only 1100 I know that will shoot 3" is the .410, I can be wrong!!! |

Sorry, i forgot to tell ya'll that a gunsmith did some work to gun and ended up putting another barrel on it so he would be able to change the choke.

Some 1100's could fire the 3" shells. This is what Remington has to say.
he gas cylinders are welded in slightly different locations. This is partly because the 11-87 has a longer magazine tube. The 11-87 also has 2 gas orifice holes. Only the 2-3/4 inch chambered version of the 1100 will have two. The magnum 1100 barrel has only one. The 1100 can shoot only 2 3/4" or 3" shells depending on the barrel installed, and with the 1187 models with magnum barrels can shoot both 2 3/4" and 3" shells. To accomplish this, two additional holes are drilled in the top/front of the gas cylinder, and covered with a tempered steel spring. There is a relief cut made into the gas cylinder to accommodate the spring. The Model 1100 gas cylinder will not have the relief cut or the spring. So, as long as he has the right barrel, he can shoot 3" shells. Actually with that barrel he can only shoot 3" shells. At least that is how I read it.Becausewith the 3" barrel it will not cycle the action properly when firing 2 3/4" shells.As for shooting lead, fire away. The steel shot stamping indicates it is ok for shooting the harder steel shot. Good luck. |

You are correct on the gas port holes. The magnum gun won't cycle with lower powered load and, if you drill a second hole to get it to cycle with these standard loads; the gun will beat itself to death with the 3" magnums. This is the dilemna that set the stage for the 11-87.

Will confirm also. Got a 1100 LT-203inch field model and it will not cycle 2 3/4 loads. Tried the highbrass/low brass 2 3/4 game /trap etc but it needs the 3inchers. Great gun but the cost of ammo puts a big crimp inpractice sessions with clay birds.
