Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I FINALLY HAVE IT!!! One of my customers has been promising me that he would bring me his 50BMG (State Arms single shot bolt) just to carry out for fartsNgiggles. I got a call from work this morning that it was waiting on me. I hightailed it up there and WOW this mother is BAAAAAD! It has a 8x32x56 Nightforce on it and since I am taking it out this weekend I don't have time toship some ammo into the shopfor it so I ran down to another gunshop and picked up two boxes of 600someodd grain ball ammo and am ready to LIGHT THIS MOTHER UP!!!
I honestly don't think people believe me (lol except those that really know me ) when I say I am going to shoot a doe with it "just because". The fellow who I bought the ammo from shoots 50s quite a bit and I was surprised when he told me they have the ballistics (too 1k yds) that basically mirror that of a 300WinMag. I was surprised, I know it REALLY retains velocity well (about 2700fps at muzzle and a hair over 2k at 1k yds) and with such heavy bullets it bucks the wind like no other, but I honestly didn't think it would shoot that relatively flat. I haven't quite figured out how in the world I am gonna get this 30-40# behemoth up into a 2man ladderstand yet, but once up there I have padded shooting rails and over 600yds in either direction from which to "lay em low". Our second rifle season opens Saturday and at 3 does per day, I have my work cutout for me. ;)I've seen vids and read/heard all the stories of using the mighty one on big game, but has anyone in here actually done it? BOY this is gonna be fun ![]() ![]() RA |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Have a ball RA. Take some pics of what a 50 will do to a doe if you get the chance. I too would really love to take a deer with a 50, "just because".[8D] Actually I would love to take an elk from across a canyon with one.;)

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Dang it, I didn't check that my son was logged in and posted under his name.
|
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
what I wouldnt give to be there with you!!! I (in my sick and twisted mindset) would be totally amused at just watching you sit in the tree with it, much less see you shoot something with it. Maybe you could use a spotter???? :D
|
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I had talked to a guy that used to come in at works once in a while and he had mentioned that he had taken a bull moose with his 50BMG last year. Now I can’t confirm if he did it but he was not one to make things up. He did mention that he had taken out the head not to damage the meat....
|
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
i've thought of doing something like that. that'ld be pretty cool to say the least. just be sure not to shoot over a hill. :D
something i've wondered is why people hunting in africa don't use the 50's in africa for dangerous game like elephants and such. especially if you could get something that would penetrate and still get a good bit of hydrostatic shock. |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
If I knew how to get my digital camera to work on this I would put a pic up of it. But I found one on the companies website. It is a East Ridge/State Arms "Rebel" with a 8x32x56 Nighforce atop it.
http://www.statearms.com/rebel.html Hunter with regards too Africa and the big 50 it is my understanding that in some of the countries over there the 50BMG isn't legal for use except the military (whether that is true or not I cannot verify). But one thing that sticks in my mind would be the weight, size of the gun. I don't think you can build a 50 in anything much lighter than 25#s with most being in the 35-50# range. Anything any lighter would severely run the risk of physically hurting the shooter. This thing makes a 460 Wby look like a 38Special. Run the numbers, stoke a 750grn 50 caliber bullet up too 2900fps and you can imagine the kind of recoil it generates. I believe the ft#s generated by the bullet is somewhere in the 11k too 15k ft pnd range. Elephants at 1500yds would be childsplay! Also most ammo needs at least a 30" barrel with 34 or longer being preferred. Penetration wise, lol I seriously doubt ANYTHING over there would stop the bullet. It penetrates light armor and I just watched a video from the Marine corp where they shot it through a 3" thick manhole cover. I doubt Dumbo would do more than slightly slow the bullet down, lol. BUT I have seen videos somewhere in Africa where 50s were used and the animals fell like they were hooked up too a 220V.This gun I have with scope is an even 40#s so I aint carrying it very far. LOL the stand I am actually going to be using it in is in the middle of a large field, is in a 100yr old oak tree that is 6' in diameter and I can drive my electric cart right up under it. So I AINT carrying this thing but about 5 steps! This is gonna be FUUUUUUUUUN, RA |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Good luck, hope ya bag one. Back when I was shooting my 50, I took a coyote with it.It wandered onto the range while I was setting up.The yote had a 50 cal hole on entrance, and removed the front leg on the offside. But, the bullet hit the shoulder, it didn't just blow it off like you would think. Good luck
|
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Thanks 1000, I was wonderin about that myself. I wasn't sure if I should go for a shoulder shot or aim further back and count on shock and energy damage to take em out. I don't really wanna just DESTROY the animal too the point were it is inedible, that would be wasteful. I would think a lil ol shoulder on a 120# doe wouldn't offer much resistance too something like the 50 so I kinda wonder if I wouldn't be better off staying off of it.
Coyote wise, we have LOTS of em out there. One steps out Saturday he is gonna REALLY hate my plans for him for the rest of the day! RA |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Sounds awesome. Please don't forget to provide pics. Go out and buy a camera if you don't have one.

Really envy you, Red--- This is gonna be some experience!!
Sure would like to see pics of the results, and hear the stories afterward----Please keep the rest of us posted, if you will. Thanks---- |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
red now that i think about it i have heard before the the 50 is illegal for civilians over there and everything. and the whole thing about having to carry it.
i sure feel sorry for any animal that walks out in from of that beast while you're hunting. you said you're going to hunt out of a treestand right??? how are you going to get that into the tree??? |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Rebel those are Rebels with wood stocks. The one I borrowed is the tractical which is alloy and and basically a "skeleton" frame. Looks like one mean mother. LOL the guys at work were askin what Bradley it was stolen off of?
HKY I am going to "try" and use it from a steel 2 man ladder stand that has a steel shooting rail around it. Hopefully a piece of plywood and a sandbag will provide sufficient surface to secure the midsection. If not then I will just have to shoot it off the ground. I have a portable shooting bench so I might carry that along as well. The ladder section too the stand is only about 13'-14' tall so I should be able to get it up there with a lil gruntin and pullin. LOL I don't see my haul line working on this mother! ;) As much fun as this is gonna be I am practically giddy. You would think I was going after monster bucks in south TX and yet it is only some ol lop eared muley heads in westn TN. RA |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Lol. Always use enough gun.
I wouldn't want to have to pack one of those or put it up in a treestand- maybe you can get a chainhoist?:D The only one I've ever shot or ever seen for that matterbelonged to a guy who built it himself by machining his own receiver, using a surplus M2 barrel, he had machined a muzzle brake that was roughly the same shape and size as a coke bottle, and I think he cobbled the stock together as well- I remember seeing duct tape to hold the cheek piece on. This beast had to weaigh 65-70 lbs, it held very nice and steady and had very little recoil but an amazing muzzle blast. I wish I had one of those toys.[8D] |

The shot was at a doe walking across a power line right of way. The range (laser range finder) was a measured 732 yards. It dropped the doe on the spot with a hit to the shoulder using a 750 grain A-Max. |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Should be about like a 12 Ga. slug at close range. Dead is dead.

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Can you imagine shooting a 500 pound boar hog with that... There ain't no way it would run off! I want one!

no comment..
this thread is childish |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I always thought BMG stood for "Big Mother*** Gun." [8D]:D;);)

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
MAKE SURE TO TAKE A TRASHBAG TO CARRY THE DEER HOME IN!! lol but I've seen a possum shot with a .500 S&W and there honestly wasnt enough critter left to skin. I'll have to see if I can round up the pics of it but have fun. oohh yea you might consider some ear plugs. ;)

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Make sure to tie yourself up real good in the stand so that thing doesn't knock you right out when you light it up

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Salty how is it childish? We are laughing yes, but it's all in good fun. Like James said, "Dead is dead" and in the end does it matter if I killed does with a 50cal or a 22/250? Sure the thought of it is kinda funny while being a lil intimidating at the same time, but what the heck? Most folks would LOVE to have a buddy just walk in and plunk down his 50 cal and tell you to basically, "Have at it"! I will probably only shoot one doe with it mainly because it is just not going to be that terribly easy to manuever thisthing around in the field. I plan on shootingup the rest of the ammo I havewith a couple of buddies during the middle of the day for "fartsNgiggles".
If I were out to disrespect the animalI would be using incindiary rounds to setthem afireor armor piercing and waiting until they were behind a tree and shooting through it to get too them (which HAS been done on big game with 50s in the past! There was a film at the Shot Show several years ago which featured just such.) but I am not going to do that, I am simply going to be shooting them at reasonable distances (less than 600yds) with a simple 650grn FMJ and will still put the bullet right behind the shoulder. I am hunting on a large, multi-thousand acre tract of land so the danger of hitting something 2k yds away is not a worry. If it were I certainly wouldn't be doing it. I just would like to honestly be able to tell my customers who ask, "What does a 50BMG do too a whitetail?" Hell I been curious of that myself for a long time. Some folks mainsprings are just wound a lil tight I reckon! RA |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
red just curious can you use fmj's on game animals where you'll be hunting? i know some states don't allow the use of them.
|
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Funny you should ask that HKY, legally NO you cannot use FMJs in TN. And I wouldn't even try using them on something smaller than about a 270. But in this case the only ammo available quickly too me was either the FMJs, Incidiary, Armor Piercing and Tracers. For deer they probably won't do any differentthan the FMJs but the dealer who carries this kind of stuff in my town also had APs loose for $1.55 a round. The FMJs were packed from the factory (in Bosnia of all places!) in 20 round boxes and were $30 a box so I got two of them and put them in a ammocan I have so you could say it was 6 one or half dozen the other.
Actually there will be another gun in the stand with us. My buddy who will be filming will also have his Savage/Lazzeroni Patriot nearby. So if you were to "ask" us while in the tree, the Lazz is for deer and the 50 is for those pesky yotes!!! ;) RA |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
ORIGINAL: Ridge Runner shooting deer with a 50 BMG is not funny, this however is http://www.buckstix.com/howitzer.htm Red be sure and take pics! RR |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
If it makes you feel like more of a man to shoot a 50 at a deer than have at it.. post pics. |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I think he was joking about the howitzer thing....too bad that site wouldn't load, I wanted to see it.
|
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
The cannon thing was funny. Salty I see your point but I think in the end the result is the same. Dead deer. I can't wait to see a pic.
I was in the gun shop on Friday and I was talking to the guy about what you are going to do. He was telling me that years ago they used to shoot at deerwith a truck bed mounted military cannon. I can't remember what caliber he said they used but he was telling me that the cartridges were $14 a pop. Tom |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
You might of started something here Red.I am now wondering about building a cannon and use a bowling ball for the projectile. It would have to have an electronic trigger device and usesome com'ere deer to get them in the right alignment with the barrel.2 to 5yrds away, now that would make for a really fun demented ,How to make deer fly video.

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Great stuff for young hunters to read.

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I saw something on TV one time where guys built their own cannons and shot bowling balls out of them. One guy used his cannon to knock down a brick grain silo. Took him about 15 shots on one side to weaken it enough to bring it down. Also went thru several balls.
It was pretty interesting. |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Well I don't know about shooting a deer with a cannon with bowling balls But the .50 is perfectly humane I think at least nobodys bragging how many times theve shot deer with a .22lr or a pellet gun etc. OVERKILL IS BETTER THAN UNDERKILL

RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
Well, its been over two months.....how did the hunt make out?
Are there any pics? You can't keep us in suspense forever, some of us have bedtimes you know.:D |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I wonder if hunters were able to kill deer back in 1859 before henry came out with their repeaters. Or Im absolutley suprised that that you could even hunt deerin 1894, seeing that the 30-30 was too weak. (And thats why .300 win mags have to be used now in their stead in 2006)I guess what im trying to say is... at whatextreme do hunters need to go to to kill whitetail deer? Sure the 50 cal bmg. will killdeer, and it might even be interesting for someone to see what it would do.
I like what james b said..."great stuff for young hunters to read" About 9 years ago I went into dick's sporting goods thinking that I needed a 30-06 to kill deer. It wasn't till I got home that everyone was telling me that the 300 win mag would have been a better choice because it would be more effective than my 30-06. I actually believed them and thaught I was undergunned:eek:. It wasn't untill I started researching for myself thatI foundthat there was a time when men worewool, red and black ,checkered hunting outfits and funky hats with a cock feather sticking out of it. And It was also an even bigger suprise to find that these men used calibers like .243, .250 savage,.300 savage and 6mm to harvest whitetails and did it effectively for decades. If the calibers worked then why wouldn't they now? I also found that JACK CONNORS hunted grizzly bear with a cartidge thatVERY FEWwould even attempt to go out and hunt grizzlies with anymore. (30-06) And also TEDDY ROOSEVELT harvested just about everything on this planet with his winchester 1895 in .405 win., another cartidge that hunters today would think foolish to bring on a cape buffalo hunt. Its fine if you want to use the bmg...blast away at them....maybe someday I will hunt with one....I dont know when or for what, but maybe. GOOD HUNTING, I TRUST YOUR JUDGEMENT |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I shot a .50 cal BMG.... My brother-in-law has one. Last year at Christmas holiday, I went out on his farm way up in back and we took turns shooting that evil, mother of a gun! [&:]
To those who have never shot the 50BMG.... It weights a bloody ton compared to what you would think for a firearm. If a 12GA shotgun weight in at around 8 lbs fully loaded, the 50BMG weighs in at over 40 pounds. Here is a photo of me shooting my brother-in-law's 50BMG (we balanced it on the side of his pickup truck bed). I am shooting itlefty and looking through the scope.Noticethe braced stance thatI have with this bad beast!!! ;) The kick from the 50BMG isn't too bad. It's like shooting a shotgun with a slug. But the nano-second percussion blast afterwards is what gets you. You feel a big WHUMP in you heart up into your brain as soon as you press the trigger. It's not a rifle by any means. It is an artilliary round!!! |
RE: Hehehe snicker snicker (50BMG)
I want one of those...4 years 'till I could legally...
