out to 400 yards i wouldn't buy anything that would adjust to 12 or 14 power. if you're going to exceed 400 yards, you will prolly need to go bigger. also, i prefer leupold scopes...nikons are also good. keep in mind, when you buy a scope....you get what you pay for. this meaning, save your money until you can afford a good one. stay away from tasco, simmons, bushnell, etc.

A quality 2.5 x 8 is an excellent choice for this caliber and yardage.

A 3x9 or 3x10 is plenty of magnification for 400 yard shots on big game.

A scope with 3x9 or 3x10 would be plenty as previously mentioned...

If you can get a scope that goes down as low as 2 power then great...even 1.5 is cool, but don't go higher than 3-4 as your low end. If you can get a scope that can go up as high as 12 then great, but don't go lower than 7-8 for your high end.
Honestly, the best buys out there are often the 3-9's that everybody seems to sell.
I've been reading and looking and using for the last couple years while I upgraded my scopes.
I think the best buys out there are the Burris Fullfield 2 with the free spotting scope or binocs, the Simmons Aetec or newerMaster series Aetec, the discontinued Simmons Whitetail expeditions, and the Leupold VX-1 and VX-2. If you have more money available then enjoy the higher end scopes.

I'm with the 2.5 x 8 guy. I just like that "wide field of view" on the low end, for easily finding animials at the "sane" ranges you "should" be shooting at.

I think guys plan for the 400+ yard shots with big power scopes, and then make 99.999% of there shots under 300 yards. (as they should)

That's why they call in HUNTING instead of SHOOTING, get closer! It's not cool wounding animials.
