Boy----I don't know what in-line for sure we're talking about, but my CVA with 100 gr. rattles my dentures. Shoots good, but takes some serious concentration.

223 for a 8yr old .... wow that bullet will go a long way when he misses ... I would never give a high powered rifle to a child ... personally I would start him off with a 410 shotgun ...let him work his way up as he gained experience ...respect and responsobility for a weapon like that ...JMO

RE: .223 for 8 yr. old for deer?
The .223 is plenty of gun to take a whitetail with. I wouldn't recommend taking shots past about 150 yds, but that's mainly due to the age of your daughter. You'll be right there, so shot selection isn't going to be a problem. The main thing is that the gun fits her. Anything from .223 on up will hurt if it's not tucked into her shoulder really good. Hope you guys have/had good luck!

(refering to a hunter using the .223)Another buck shows up and he took his time and put two bullets in him. Never found that deer, either,or even any blood.
This caliberwas not the problem, the shooter was.
