Default .280 or .308 which one?

Ok.

This has probably been asked a zillion times here but, what is your opinion? I am looking to purchase another rifle. I can't decide whether I want the .280 mountain rifle from remington or go with the .308 caliber which I can get a rifle from just about any manufacturer.

I hunt primarily wild hogs and whitetail deer.

I have run through ballistics on each caliber using the Remington Shoot program. The .280 has better ballistics but not by much.

I own both calibers and both execelent deer calibers. Ammo for the .308 can be found anyplace. If you reload, that's another story in favor of the .280...

Personally, I'm a 7mm man---bought my FIRST 280 in 1963--it was virtually unheard of then. Shot deer with it for nearly 20 yrs. before going to 7mm Mag. Have used the 308 also. Generally a little better selection of bullets. Both are extremely good choices. Both are or can be very accurate guns, when loaded for properly. You won't go wrong either way.

Both are fine deer rifles. 7mm and .308 diameter bullets are pretty good these days. I would probably lean toward a .308. Very accurate cartridge.

Being that my favorite is the .308 Winchester, I hate to say it, but I'd go with the .280!
I doubt that any animal could tell the difference though! The .280 will shoot a little flatter, but it wouldn't be that great of a difference until you get way out there!

I own alot of guns but haven't owned a .308 yet. I did have a 7-08 for a couple of years and it was "decent" (LOVED the gun, it was a Model 7 Mountain Rifle). I have had a .280 700 (Custom Shop LSS) for several years and tho I am a "magnumophile" (I have two 7mags as well) I simply LOVE my .280. I don't exactly know why either. I guess because the .280 is so "much" rifle without being a magnum and while it's not superfast, doesn't kick the fillings out of your teeth and it's report doesn't mimick a mushroom cloud, the gun kills deer quickly and at looooooooong ranges!!!

You WONT be sorry with a .280,
RA

Both are great calibers. The 280 offers a little flatter trajectory and the 308 offers heavier bullets. Out to 400 yards, both would do a good job.
