A great starter rifle?
I am new to hunting and looking for a good rifle. I am looking to spend $400-$600. And was thinking more along the lines of a 270 or 7mmag. I am a large stature person and can handle the recoil. But this rifle will be only used for whitetail deer. And was leaning more towards a Weatherby Vanguard or a Remington 700. The ranges in which I will be hunting are 250 yard and under as I do not feel comfortable with a longer shot. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

RE: A great starter rifle?
Actually either the .270 or the 7-Mag in either of the rifles you noted are just fine. I'd pick the Remington but the Vanguard is a fine rifle as well.

I'd go with the 7mm Rem. Mag. Good luck.

30-06, .270, 7m-08, 7 mm mag, .308. Flip a coin and/or find a gun that you like and can afford in any of these calibers, whichever caliber it is, that's the one you should pick! If you have any personal bias, go that way and don't look back.

RE: A great starter rifle?
270 if its for whitetail only. 7mm is what I ended up getting but I mgiht hunt something larger sometime. Even if you do, 270 will handle most everything with less recoil and more shells for your money.

RE: A great starter rifle?
I think i'm getting a Remington 700 ADL. I am going to go with the .270 because it is strictly for whitetail only. Anyone who has this rifle would greatly appreciate some info on how it has worked for you. And thanks for all the replies and info.

RE: A great starter rifle?
I recently had the pleasure of shooting a GEM of a little rifle the other day. Made by savage and sold under the stevens name, the Stevens Model 200. This little beauty has the internals of the savage 110 just dropped into a synthetic stock. The Stock is much sterdier than i expected, the triggerpull is crisp, the accuracy is OUTSTANDING. i fired about 20 rounds through with a .80 average spread at 100yards. I'm buying one this next week, as a matter of fact, and i'm spending the extra money on a slick new scope!
I found it for $270, which is mind boggling to me. All the online reviews are glowing for this rifle as well - it definately fills the void for the budget hunters in ability and price. it outperforms a lot of high priced guns! Check this out: http://www.nrapublications.org/tar/Stevens200.asp http://www.gunblast.com/Stevens-200.htm it was even given this rifle of the year pre-nom: http://www.shootingindustry.com/05prenoms.html Again, this is a serious bargain, no bull**** shooting and no frills. if you want a pretty wood stock or a brandname other than Savage, by all means go somewhere else. but for pure functionality at impressive price, this is the rifle for me, at least. Peronally, i think it's beautiful with black metal on a blue-grey stock! good luck in your search! |
