RE: whats a .270 good for
It has taken every species of game in North America and most of the game in Africa. In the hands of a good hunter and good shot, it will kill anything on this planet. Its best suited for pronghorn, deer, elk, sheep and moose. Pick up a book by Jack O Connor and get the whole story.

RE: whats a .270 good for
My feelings about the .270 Winchester pretty much mimic James B's thoughts.
It is plenty enough powerful a cartridge to take every single species of deer this continent has to offer as well as other animals like pronghorn, sheep, mountain goats, etc... There are only a few animals in North America that I would not feel comfortable hunting wtih it. Any of the BIG bears (grizzly, polar, and brown), and bison. Although the .270 can certainly kill these animals as well I would much prefer to have a larger and heavier bullet. The rest, such as moose, elk, black bear, caribou, mountain goat, sheep, deer, etc... are all well within the .270 Winchesters capeabilities. This does not mean one will be effective hunting the larger animals with light weight thinly constructed bullets. A person needs to match the bullet being used to the game being hunted. |
RE: whats a .270 good for
Since I'm such a fan of the good ole 30-06, I want to pipe in and say I think the .270 is just as good for everything that the 30-06 does - about equal for most game and situations, a shade less good for some, and a shade better for some. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for all species of deer, elk, moose. Know the range you can shoot very accurately at, and that's about how far it will kill em dead!
