RE: AR-15's
Hi I have not got a chance to take my ar into the feild yet. But have heard lots of good things about them for this purpose. It has the range for just about any shot ,and is very cheap to shoot! As far as getting one for under $500 ,I would say your going to spend an easy $600 to $700 dollors .Olympic arms makes a model called the "plinker" with a 16" barrel that is nice for about $550. I prefer the 20" my self The pcr 4 model .But as any gun nut knows $500 is just a start I 've had mine for 5 months now and have well over $1500 in it all ready.Good luck my freind and happy hunting

RE: AR-15's
Hi bflem55. I don't have an AR but certainly fired an M-16 regularly back in my military days. About a year and a half ago I opted to get a Bushmaster M-17S Bullpup rather than an AR. I have to tell you that the M-17 is definitely more comfortable and better balanced than the AR's. They accept AR/M16 mags and fire .223 ammo, has an ambidextrous magazine release, a 21.5 inch Match barrel. They have fixed "25 meter" combat sites but are also set up for optics with a "see thru" Weaver type rail attached.
If you're not familiar with the bullpup design, the action is set behind the trigger which allows the overall length of the firearm to be shorter and more compact without cutting back on your barrel. The trigger being set further ahead makes your hold on the firearm much more natural and overall much more comfortable to shoot.
If you're interested you can take a look at one on the Bushmaster web site ( www.bushmaster.com ) and it just do happens that there is one listed in the classified ads here at hunting.net.

for a varmit gun for not a whole lot of money get the 22-250, because in a AR you are going to need to drop a lot more moeny to get it to do the same thing, in terms of accuracy

BFLEM55,
In order to stay in your budget, I would recommend staying with a bolt action rifle, savage put`s out a nice barrel target that fell`s in your budget and will deliver very respectable accuracy, if you can sqeeze a few more dollars I would opt for a remington 700.
To keep ammo cost down stay in the .223 rem caliber, this will give great groups out to 250 to 300 yards if longer range shots are required i would look at 22-250,220 swift or .243 win.
Now you would just be wasteing your money and your time trying to find a quality ar-15 for $500.00, they just do not exsist!!!
If you wanted to build one, kits still run $430.00 or better and you still need a quality receiver and that runs $125 to $175.00, and now you have to build it!
But the ar-15 won`t give you the accuracy that the bolt rifle will!
