New .460 S+W Magnum for deer.
I must say, I'm quite impressed with the published stats on the new big-bore handgun cartridge.
With a 200g bullet, it's about 2,300 fps, and 2,400 ft/lbs!!
It's THE flattest shooting handgun cartridge ever developed. With a 200 yard zero (yeah 200), it should keep the bullet in the kill zone of a whitetail from point blank range out to 250 yards. Wow, and delivers more energy at 300 yards than a 44Mag does at the muzzle.
Here's the best part...the recoil isn't supposed to be any more than a 44Mag.
This thing sounds perfect for handgunninga deer. I think S+W's X-Frame gun is too big for me to hold comfortably, but other gun makers are sure to follow.
What do you think?

I am really tempted to get on for my encore pistol in 12" or 15". Plus I love the literature on S&W's site. If you want to shoot lighter loads it will chamber 454 Casull or 45 Long Colt. lol.

Yeah, it should shoot really nice out of a heavy barrelled single-shot like that. I'd like to see Ruger put it in their Super Blackhawk, but I don't know how quick they will be to jump on it since they have the .480 Ruger out there in play, and only have that in the Super Redhawk so far.

If and when other companies make guns chambered in the round, watch out for recoil. You said the gun didn't fit you well, but the gun is the reason the recoil "feels" like the recoil of a 44 magnum. it is not really as light as the 44 just the big, heavy gun makes it as comfortable to shoot as stout 44 loads.

Well, I was very skeptical. So I met up with one of the guys at the range that shoots the 460 and yep, my Mod29 44 mag with heavy H110 24gr 240gr XTP loads kick more.
I was shocked but now a believer. The wieght and compensator really do work. So the magazines ain't lyin.
Now, got to figure out how to get one without going over a grand. But I will have one.
I don't know why, but big pistols are addictive.

I found a 460 X-frame at a local gun shop, and the grip dimensions seem pretty close, if not identical, to my 629 in 44mag. I guess it wouldn't be too big for me after all. The 7ish inch one even balances pretty decent.

I was looking into one myself. A local dealer had on for $950. And then you need to look at $300-$400 for a decent scope. Ammo was priced less than the .50 S&W mag. It fit my hand very well, but didn't exactly float my boat. And you would need hearing protection out in the field. Still might consider it in the future.
