winchester model 70 weatherby
 

A guy at work has a winchester 70 synthetic stainless chambered in 300 weatherby. he says it is a stock gun. has anyone else heard of win chamb this cal? It has a nikon scope. He will sell it for 500$ I am in the market for a rifle for hunting mainly deer. I may decide to go elk hunting. I was thinking on getting a 270 wsm, Being a greenhorn.. is this gun to big?

Be aware that weathery factory loads are verylimited in selection and are quite pricy as well.

Yes they chambered the 300 WBY, and still do, but like stubble said the ammo is on the expensive side and not exactly found on every shelf in every store.

However if that doesn't bother you and the rifle is in good shape then I would snatch it up real quick. You didn't specifically say which model it is but $500 for the rifle and scope sounds like an excelent purchase.

Good rifle, good caliber, and good price. According to "Ammo and Billistics II" one can purchase 21 different loads from various manufactors. In "Cabela's Shooting 2005" catalog the prices range from $27.99 to $49.99. Go for it!! Good luck.

It isn't too hard at all to find 300wby ammo. But the other weatherby caliber bullets are hard to find. I myself would go with a 7mm.

I guess pricey is one way to describe 300 Wby ammo. I pay $15 bucks for Federal 30-06 (not premiums) and $10 more for 300 Wby in Federal Premium. I've found that the Federal Premium (or what ever they are calling it now) in 300Wby outshoots the more expensive proprietary loads that Norma loads for the Weatherby brand.

The federal and remington 300 wby loads also produce much less velocity than the weatherby loads.They barely edge out some 300winmag loads.

Stubbs is right, the "cheap" stuff you find for Weatherbys IMHO really aren't worth it. Weatherbys are really in their element when they are cranked up and the coal is poured too them. The 300Wby IS more powerful than the 300Winnie, not by a huge margin but a couple hundred fps IS worth the price of admission IMHO. The 300Wby is THE original supermag 30 and while it might not seem as high and mighty as it once did in the days before the RUMs, the commercialization of the 30/378 or the Lazzeroni's it never the less offers more too the shooter looking for something a bit more than the normal 308/30-06 without having to take up reloading or building custom guns in the name of having "something different".

The Federal and Remington loads are abysmal if you ask me. Sure they might shoot great (as far as a paper group is concerned) but I think you shoot something like a 300Wby because you want to step out there and touch em from afar. The only "commercial offerings" that I have seen that are supercharged and puts the 300Wby in it's proper light are those from Wby and Norma of course, Conelly Precision and the new Nosler Custom ammo. Lastweek I carried my 300Wby out and sighted it in with some 150 Wby ammo and then switched over too a new box of 150Accubonds from Nosler Custom (the box says 3475fps) and they recoil like thunder but shot GREAT!!! (Hopefully I will get to "melt" one in MO Saturday morning with this very combo.)

Race cars cost more to feed and maintain for sure, otherwise we would ALL be driving Ferrari's too work. But when they are properly maintained and "hittin on all 8" they sure are a blast to handle and can only then begin to show you what they really have! ;)

For $500 I'm tempted to buy the friggin' gun myself. For a well built rifle, and a decent scope, you aren't going to go wrong for $500. With the money you save over buying a new rifle you can get some reloading equipment and make that gun breathe fire!
